When you look at a Diamond Plot<\/a> on a Diamond Report<\/a> (often called a Certificate<\/strong>), you’ll see a lot of lines, marks, and squiggles of different colors, like Red<\/strong> or Green<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nBut, what do these all mean?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nWhat Inclusions, Flaws, and Blemishes do they represent?<\/p>\n

\nYou’ll need a Key of Symbols Chart<\/strong> to explain them.<\/p>\n

\nAnd that’s exactly what I’ve done here!<\/p>\n

I’ve gone to the 5 leading Diamond Grading Certification Companies in the World: GIA<\/strong> (Gemological Institute of America<\/a>), AGS<\/strong> (American Gem Society<\/a>), EGL<\/strong> (European Gemological Laboratory<\/a>), IGI<\/strong> (International Gemological Institute<\/a>), and HRD<\/strong> (HRD Institute of Gemmology<\/a> – HRD means: “Hoge Raad voor Diamant<\/strong>“, which translated in English means “Diamond High Council<\/strong>” or DHC), to obtain further information. <\/p>\n

I requested a chart of their Key of Symbols<\/strong> for their Diamond Plotting<\/strong> and Grading, and what they sent me is just beautiful and fascinating to look at.<\/p>\n

\nBut first, let’s take a look at an Diamond Example<\/strong> so you understand what I’m talking about… (These Diamonds are for Sale at James Allen<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Diamond Example 1<\/h2>\n

\nThe Round Brilliant Cut Diamond<\/strong> shown above, has the Diamond Plot<\/strong> shown below… <\/p>\n

\"Diamond<\/a><\/p>\n

\nYou’ll that it has both Red Marks (Meaning Internal<\/strong> Inclusions) and Green Marks (Meaning External<\/strong> Inclusions, called Blemishes<\/strong>, that show up on the outside or surface of the stone). It’s a little hard to tell from this Diamond Plot image, but the Cavity and Knots are External Blemishes<\/strong>, and are marked in Green (More visible from the Bottom View of the Diamond, the Pavilion<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

And if you look at the Comments Section<\/strong> of the actual Report, you’ll see that not all the Inclusions and Flaws are actually shown on the drawing. It says: Pinpoints are not shown. Surface Graining is not shown<\/strong>, as seen here…<\/p>\n

The interesting part of it is this; there are up to 24 different Markings and Symbols<\/strong> that refer to the different types of Imperfections found in Diamonds (the MORE<\/strong> Imperfections there are in a Stone, the lower the Clarity Grade<\/a> will be).<\/p>\n

Now we bring up the Diamond Plot and Key of Symbols<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

You see how all those Red and Green Lines and Marks start to make sense? <\/p>\n

Naturals<\/h2>\n

\nThe Naturals that are shown on the Diamond above, are Diamond Characteristics<\/strong> that normally show up on the Girdle of the Diamond<\/a> and are External Inclusions (shown in Green<\/strong> on the Plot above).<\/p>\n

\nIt’s actually kind of fun to scope out a couple of Loose Diamonds<\/strong> and compare the Flaws on the Plot, to the Key of Symbols, to see exactly what resides in the stone.<\/p>\n

One Last Diamond Example<\/h2>\n

\nLet’s take a look at one more Diamond. This time a Princess Cut Diamond<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nAnd now, let’s look at the Diamond Plot and Symbols<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nAs you can see, every Inclusion Width, Length, Shape and Size can vary wildy. And under magnification<\/strong> (10x – Using a Jewelers Loupe<\/a> or a Microscope<\/a>) they look much different than they would with the naked eye. It’s an awesome microscopic world to scrutinize<\/strong>. Every stone is different and every Plot and Diagram is different as well. <\/p>\n

\nSo grab a Diamond, look at the Plot, and study the Key of Symbols<\/strong>. You’ll understand more of what Clarity<\/strong> means, and how to actually Judge Flaws and Inclusions for yourself.<\/p>\n
