Almost every jewelry store, every diamond book, and every jewelry salesperson will tell you that there’s a 5th C<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nWe already know the 4C’s<\/a> are cut<\/a>, color<\/a>, clarity<\/a> and carat weight<\/a>…<\/p>\n

\nBut some jewelers like to tack on this mysterious 5th C<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nDepending on which store you visit, that 5th C could be<\/strong> Certification<\/strong>, Conflict-free<\/strong>, or even Confidence<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nWhat’s funny is each store is different<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nIn fact, I’ve seen a whole list of different 5C’s over the course of 22 years.<\/p>\n

The 5 C’s:<\/h2>\n

Certification<\/strong><\/td>\nConscientious<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Clean<\/strong><\/td>\nCredentials<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Cutting Style<\/strong><\/td>\nComparison<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Conflict Free<\/strong><\/td>\nConfirmation<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Credibility<\/strong><\/td>\nTransparency<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n

Do note that the last C in the list doesn’t even begin with a C… <\/strong>:)<\/p>\n

\nI’ll add one more C to the mix…<\/p>\n

CONFUSION!<\/h2>\n

\n\"The<\/p>\n

\nIt’s tough enough for customers to grasp the 4C’s<\/strong> and all the information they hold, let alone a 5th C<\/strong>. And not to mention a 5th one that is different from store to store.<\/p>\n

\nI know jewelry stores want to sound credible<\/strong> by adding in confidence “You can trust us…<\/strong>“, and certification “If the diamond is certified, it’s good…<\/strong>“, but it’s not a real ‘C<\/strong>‘. <\/p>\n

\nIt’s not part <\/strong>of the 4C’s<\/a> and it has nothing to do with grading diamonds.<\/p>\n

\nThe 5th C was not designed by GIA<\/strong> (the founders of the 4C’s), and it’s not a part of their official diamond grading system<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nIt just makes people scratch their heads<\/strong> and try to piece this puzzle together.<\/p>\n

\nThe 4C’s give you more than enough information<\/strong> to make a great diamond buying decision. <\/p>\n

The 5th C is over-kill.<\/h2>\n

The 5th C is not<\/strong> Carbon, Credit, Care<\/strong>, Courteous or Cooperation<\/strong>. If a store is trying to sell you on their own special ‘C<\/strong>‘, just ignore it<\/strong>. They’re just trying to be “Clever<\/strong>“. It’s not working.<\/p>\n

\nThe real beauty is cut<\/a>, color<\/a>, clarity<\/a> and carat weight<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\nIt’s not some made up C (Cabin Fever<\/a>), that is supposed to make one store sound more knowledgeable or more sophisticated<\/strong> than another… It’s just nonsense.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nLet the 4C’s stand on their own<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nThey don’t need any help. It’s hard enough for the average consumer to digest those.<\/p>\n

\nIf it was up to me and if I could choose one C to represent this fictional 5th C, I’d have to say:<\/p>\n

COST.<\/h2>\n

\nCost, because when it all comes down to shopping and comparing diamonds, cost is going to be the main issue for me<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nI’m going to compare quality and the 4C’s of course, and I’m also going to make sure the diamond is certified<\/strong>, but the real bottom line is:<\/p>\n

What’s it going to cost me?<\/h2>\n

\nHow much <\/strong>am I going to spend? <\/p>\n

\nThat’s what I really want to know.<\/p>\n

\nSo when a jeweler says “There is also a fifth C…<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

\nJust say “What’s it going to cost me?<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

\nBecause that’s a response I’d really love to… C<\/strong>. :)<\/p>\n
