There are 4 main reasons<\/strong> why Diamonds look foggy:<\/p>\n

  1. Inclusions<\/li>\n
  2. Fluorescence<\/li>\n
  3. Dirt<\/li>\n
  4. Cracked<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    <\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nLet’s take a closer look at these…<\/p>\n

    1) Inclusions<\/h2>\n

    \nInclusions are nature’s fingerprint<\/strong>. If Inclusions are grouped together in one spot, or if there’s a feather or cloud in your stone, it can make the Diamond appear foggy or milky in areas.<\/p>\n

    \nThe Inclusions stop light<\/strong> from entering the stone and bouncing it back into brilliance and sparkle.<\/p>\n

    \nThe more Inclusions you have (lower Clarity<\/strong>), the more cloudy or foggy areas you will see.<\/p>\n

    \nLike this Diamond below…<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n\"Foggy<\/p>\n

    \nI’ve seen I3 Diamonds<\/strong> before that don’t even look like Diamonds anymore. They’ve been so full of flaws that the entire stone looked just like a piece of chalk<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    2) Fluorescence<\/h2>\n

    \nFluorescence<\/a> is when a Diamond has a natural phenomenon of glowing in the dark (under UV light<\/strong>). It’s just another way of identifying the stone (as listed on a Diamond Report<\/a>). But sometimes these special Diamonds also give off a milky appearance in natural light as well.<\/p>\n

    \nLike so…<\/p>\n

    \n\"Diamond<\/p>\n

    \nIt doesn’t matter what the Clarity<\/a> or Color<\/a> is of the stone. It doesn’t matter if it’s a VVS with E Color<\/a>, some Fluorescent Diamonds will appear foggy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nThere is no way around this, other than viewing the stone (if it contains Fluorescence<\/strong>) before you buy it just to see if the Fluorescence makes the stone look odd or foggy.<\/p>\n

    \nI usually advise customers to stay away from Fluorescent Diamonds<\/strong>, just in case!<\/p>\n

    \nThe only great thing about Diamonds with Fluorescence is that you can usually get a better deal<\/a> on these stones. :) So don’t shy away too fast. Just view the Diamond first and then make your decision on its beauty.<\/p>\n

    3) Dirt<\/h2>\n

    \n“Hey, my Diamond doesn’t Sparkle anymore!<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

    \nThis is a common phrase Jewelers hear all the time. And once we take a look at your ring, we understand<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

    \nYou haven’t cleaned your Diamond very well. There’s crud on the bottom of the stone (some look very gross<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

    \nAnd all it takes is 20 Minutes of sitting in the Ultrasonic Cleaner<\/a> and scrubbing the bottom with a brush<\/strong> to bring your Diamond back to life again.<\/p>\n

    \nIt really is that simple<\/strong>. :)<\/p>\n

    \nA Dirty Diamond Doesn’t Sparkle!<\/p>\n

    \nTake a peek…<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n\"Dirty<\/p>\n

    \nLight can’t enter or exit the stone and the stone becomes a dull, boring rock. Not cool!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nClean your Diamond Ring often<\/strong>, at least once a week, to keep the dirt and debris and hand lotions from ruining your sparkle.<\/p>\n

    \nBuy an Ultrasonic Cleaner<\/a> or a Steam Cleaner<\/a> if you must. Just clean your stone<\/strong>. That way it won’t look foggy anymore! :)<\/p>\n

    4) Cracked<\/h2>\n

    \nCrack kills<\/strong> (always wanted to say that), and it certainly can kill a Diamond’s Sparkle and Beauty.<\/p>\n

    \nIf you hit your stone hard enough, you can chip, break, crack or nick your Diamond.<\/p>\n

    \nWhen this happens, it can send long faults <\/strong>throughout your stone and stops light dead in its tracks!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nI’ve seen stones that have been hit so hard, that half the Diamond turned a milky white<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nLike so…<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n\"Cracked<\/p>\n

    \nThe only resolution to a stone this badly damaged is to Recut the Stone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    \nAnd many times, if the Diamond is damaged greatly, it’s not even worth the price<\/strong> of recutting. The newer, and much smaller Diamond just won’t be worth it.<\/p>\n

    \nThe Diamond now goes in the trash!<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \nSo be careful with your Diamonds. Get your Diamonds and Rings insured and checked often.<\/p>\n

    \nDiamonds can break and that just leads to heart ache<\/strong>! :(<\/p>\n

    Does your Diamond look foggy?<\/h2>\n

    \nIf your Diamond looks foggy, grab a 10x Jewelers Loupe<\/a> and take a closer look. <\/p>\n

    \nIt could be cracked, it could be dirty… When a Diamond is dirty, the Inclusions stand out more<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

    \nLet’s just hope it’s the later. <\/p>\n
