Let’s take a closer look at Diamonds.<\/p>\n

\nTen times closer, 10x magnification to be exact!<\/strong> (Like if you were viewing them with a Jeweler’s Loupe<\/a> or a Microscope<\/a>)<\/p>\n

What are we looking at?<\/h2>\n

\nFlaws inside a Diamond! Big Flaws!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nI’m going to show you Ten Diamonds, half of them have Cracks<\/strong> in them, and the other half have Internal Inclusions called Feathers, Needles or Twinning Wisps.<\/p>\n

\nCan you tell a Crack from a Flaw?<\/strong> I should stop for a minute and clarify that “Cracks<\/strong>” are also considered Flaws, but for this purpose, we’ll see if you can determine a Cracked Diamond against one that isn’t.<\/p>\n

Cracked or Not?<\/h2>\n

\nLook at the ten stones below. Jot down the image numbers<\/strong> of the Diamonds that you believe are Cracked (Broken, Fractured, Chipped).<\/p>\n

\nHere we go…<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\"80<\/a><\/p>\n

\"383<\/a><\/p>\n

\"75<\/a><\/p>\n

\"71<\/a><\/p>\n

\"103<\/a><\/p>\n

\"102<\/a><\/p>\n

\"107<\/a><\/p>\n

\"91<\/a><\/p>\n

Okay…<\/h2>\n

\nNow that you’ve seen these stones close up (what they would look like if you viewed them under a microscope (thanks to James Allen<\/a>), let’s see how you did.<\/p>\n

\nThe Diamonds with Cracks are:<\/strong> 1, 3, 5, 7, 9<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Tricky right?<\/h2>\n

\nGo back and look at the stones again. Every other one is Cracked<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nLook… I’ll wait!<\/p>\n

\nDo you see why those 5 particular stones would be considered Cracked while the others aren’t?<\/p>\n

\nNo? Maybe?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s not easy!<\/h2>\n

\nAnd… I’ve not been completely honest with you! :)<\/p>\n

\nYou see… ALL of the Diamonds shown above have Feathers, Needles or Twinning Wisps<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nNONE of them are Cracked, Fractured, Chipped or Broken!!!<\/p>\n

NONE!<\/h2>\n

\nWhat?<\/p>\n

\nNot even this one…<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n\"Not<\/a><\/p>\n

This surprises many folks. They bring their stone into the store and SWEAR that their Diamond is Cracked<\/strong> or Broken. It’s not (in 99% of them)! It’s just an internal flaw, like a scar, a feather in the stone that blocks light, reflects it (which is why they appear white<\/strong>), and makes the stone look Fractured!<\/p>\n

\nPeople really do believe that their stone is Broken. Nope!<\/strong> They just happened to scrutinize it better and happened to now see the Flaw.<\/p>\n

\nIt happens quite often. Feathers, Needles and Wisps like these tend to stand out more when the Diamond is dirty also. So after a week or two of owning a brand new ring, suddenly they see Flaws that weren’t there<\/strong>. The Inclusions are more noticeable when the Diamond loses it’s sparkle.<\/p>\n

\nPeople see these Feathers and Flaws in the stone and jump at the Jeweler saying “You sold me a Cracked Diamond!<\/strong>” But they didn’t. That’s just the quality of stone you purchased… Which is generally an I1, I2 or I3<\/strong> Clarity Diamond (eye-visible Inclusions), as seen in the image below…<\/p>\n

View the Diamond Plot<\/h2>\n

\nYou can look at the Diamond Report (if you bought a Certified Stone like GIA<\/strong> – Please DO!), and view the Diamond Plot to see what Flaws are inside and outside of the stone. Like so…<\/p>\n

\"Eye<\/p>\n

\nThese Inclusions and Flaws have always been there<\/strong>. They were there when the Diamond was created Billions of years ago, and they will remain exactly like they are for another Billion! (unless you crush your stone<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

GIA Key To Symbols<\/h2>\n

\nWhen you look at the marks on the Diagram, check out the Key to Symbols<\/strong> underneath…<\/p>\n

\n\"GIA<\/p>\n

\nThe Key clearly says what all those lines and dots and flaws mean.<\/p>\n

\nThe technical term is “Feather<\/strong>” for these lines that look like Cracks. But sometimes “Needles<\/strong>” and “Twinning Wisps<\/strong>” will also look like a Crack as seen in a few of the Diamonds above.<\/p>\n

\nThey are just a common occurrence in Diamonds and it’s just a natural birthmark<\/strong> that helps to identify that stone. <\/p>\n

They aren’t Broken!<\/h2>\n

\nCleaning your stone will help hide these Flaws better<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nOften the way a Diamond is set in a mounting can also mask or hide the Flaws better as well.<\/p>\n

\nFeathers, Needles and Wisps are normal and very interesting to look at. If you look at enough of them, you’ll see they come in all different shapes and sizes.<\/p>\n

\nJust like Moles and Freckles on people<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nIt’s nature’s fingerprint, and every single one is unique.<\/p>\n

\nIt helps you look at your stone and say “Yep, that’s my Diamond!<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

\nThat’s all! Neither Bad nor Good, they just are.<\/p>\n
