2 carat (2.00) diamonds are HUGE!<\/h2>\n

\nA one carat diamond is the “dream diamond”<\/strong>, so a 2 carat diamond is like the wonderlands of wonderlands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nVery few people will ever own a diamond of this significant carat weight<\/strong> in their lifetime. Most won’t even own a 1 carat.<\/p>\n

\nIt’s all because 2 carats are very rare<\/strong>, and very expensive<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nEven the lowest clarity 2 carat diamond will still run you a hefty price<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nIn fact, any diamond over 1 carat is considered large, and the higher up you go, the more scarce they become<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nJust go into any local jewelry store and see for yourself. You would have a difficult time finding more than a couple stones in the entire city<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nJewelers don’t carry many of them because they tie up quite a bit of inventory<\/strong> and money. It’s even rare for people to even ask for them<\/strong>… Big diamonds like this are normally ordered per interest<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n1.00 carat, 1.25, 1.50 carats are found more frequent in stores, but the big 2 carats (and up) are slim pickings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Quality is important:<\/h2>\n

\nThe funny thing about clarity and big diamond sizes is the fact that the bigger the diamond, the easier it is to see inclusions in the stone<\/strong>. Plus, when you get into carat weights that size, high clarity stones are just rare<\/strong>, period. Most of the big stones you find will be SI2, I1, I2 and I3 clarity<\/strong>. Diamonds of that clarity will have visible flaws that you can see with your eye, no microscope<\/a> or a 10x jeweler’s loupe<\/a> needed. And some of the flaws will be as big and gigantic as the diamond itself “Hello! Look at Me<\/strong>!” Very obvious indeed!<\/p>\n

\nTake a look at the SI2 diamond below to see for yourself. It’s easy to see how these flaws might be quick to spot these just by looking at the stone.<\/p>\n

\nIt’s a good color (H – fine white<\/strong>). It’s got a great cut (premium<\/strong>). But the clarity (SI2) is questionable<\/strong>. The flaws are small, but I’ll bet you can see them with the bare eye<\/strong>. Even with SI2 the price still remains up there. You pay for the entire package;<\/strong> carat weight, color, cut, clarity, and rarity.<\/p>\n

\nThat’s just the way nature is.<\/p>\n

Nature is not perfect.<\/h2>\n

\nAnd with diamonds there is usually a big compromise<\/strong>. If you get a high clarity, the color is probably low. High color = low clarity<\/strong>. It’s a give and take. A battle of strengths and weaknesses. And when you get into bigger carat weights, everything just escalates<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nThe rarity of finding a diamond both high in cut<\/a>, color<\/a>, clarity<\/a> and carat weight<\/a> is almost an impossible feat<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nPlus, if you did find just such a diamond, you would pay an arm and a leg for it<\/strong>… or a small house<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nBut then again, if you’re even considering buying a 2 carat diamond, money is probably not an issue<\/strong>. Right? (Even though you still want a deal.)<\/p>\n

Color is bigger.<\/h2>\n

\nNot only do inclusions stand out more in a 2 carat diamond, but color also stands out more<\/strong>. The bigger the stone, the more prominent the color will be.<\/p>\n

\nA diamond with a faint yellow hue<\/strong> (K, L, M) may look even more yellow <\/strong>(like an N, O, P). Keep this in mind when you’re shopping for diamonds or engagement rings. You may have to step up into the G-H-I range (or higher) just to stay away from the yellowness. I will say this is not an easy task. Most diamonds of this carat weight do have color<\/strong>. If you want a white diamond you’ll have to pay the price<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

2 carat diamond prices:<\/h2>\n

\nSo let’s take a look at 2 carats (ranging from 1.94 – 2.25ct<\/strong>) from the lowest clarity (I1 in this example<\/strong>) all the way up to the top of the line (VVS1 and FL).<\/p>\n

\nThe prices shown below are obtained from James Allen<\/a> who actually has over 3,900 2 carat round diamonds in stock<\/strong> (very impressive selection), plus another 4,100 fancy cut diamonds<\/strong> in stock, which are: princess cuts, emerald cuts, asscher cuts, oval cuts, radiant cuts, pear cuts, heart cuts, marquise cuts and cushion cuts.<\/p>\n

\nOne trait you will find common in bigger stones is fluorescence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Take caution.<\/h2>\n

\nDiamonds with fluorescence (especially if it’s strong<\/strong>), can create a weird effect with light<\/strong>. It can cause a diamond to not only glow-in-the-dark<\/strong> (under a black light<\/a>), but it can also make it look foggy or hazy in natural light. Even an internally flawless diamond with perfect color can look milky!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThis is why I normally advise staying away from diamonds with any fluorescence<\/strong>, just to be safe<\/strong>. But that’s hard to do in diamonds this size, so inspect the diamonds in natural light to see how they react. Some won’t have any visual difference, but others may<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nSelecting diamonds with SI1 clarity<\/strong> (eye-clean), and a nice white color with no fluorescence<\/strong>, brings up diamonds like these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 carat diamond tips:<\/h2>\n

\nHere are a couple of other pointers if you’re buying a 2.00 carat diamond<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

1) You must buy it GIA certified:<\/h2>\n

\nIf you spend that kind of money on a diamond, it would be foolish not to have it certified<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nYou want to guarantee the clarity and color and carat weight. Most diamonds you find this size should be certified already, just make sure it’s by the tops in the industry… GIA<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

2) Scope the diamonds before you buy them:<\/h2>\n

\nYou must<\/strong> view the stone and inclusions under magnification<\/strong>. With a stone this size you’ll want to see the flaws inside and out.<\/p>\n
