Since the stone is larger, the Flaws inside get easier to see. Hence, they appear bigger!

What you couldn’t see well in a Half Carat Diamond, suddenly become apparent in a Full Carat Stone!

It’s just how it goes!

When the Diamond Diameter is bigger, you can see more of the stone, and more of what’s inside the stone. The Inclusions have no where to hide. They tend to stand out and say “Hey, look at me!“

So in larger stones, you may need to get a better Clarity just so the Flaws stay hidden!

In smaller Diamonds (like .30 CT and smaller), Clarity isn’t that important. You could get an SI2 or an I1 or I2 and no one would probably know… Unless they scrutinized the stone really well.

But try doing that with a larger stone, like One Carat and up, and it won’t take very long to spot the Imperfections.

And once you spot a Flaw, you’ll never be able to un-spot it. You’ll always see it! Always!

It will stick out like an eye sore, and no matter how many times you try to wipe it away, it will never disappear. It’s there forever!

Diamond Clarity Examples

Let’s look at two different Diamonds of different Carat Weights as an example. One Diamond is a 1.53 CT, while the other Diamond is only .30 CT…

See what I mean about the size of the stone and size of the Inclusions?

It’s just more obvious in Larger stones!

Take Another Example…

These two stones are closer in size… One Diamond is 1.00 Carat, while the other stone is a Half Carat (.50 CT)…

The Inclusions are still noticeable, but not as much.

Last Example

Take a look at one more set of Diamonds. They show the same Diamonds close up, and then smaller and smaller in size… So you can see when the Diamond gets into a smaller Weight, the Inclusions start to blend in…

Bigger Diamonds Demand Better Clarity

This is something to consider when looking at purchasing bigger stones. I would recommend a Clarity of SI1 or higher (I’d really aim for VS2 at the least). That way the Flaws and Inclusions remain microscopic ONLY… as most Flaws should be!

Buy Certified!

One other thing I would highly recommend… Making sure you buy GIA or AGS Certified Stones!

That way, your ‘High Clarity’ is HIGH, and not exaggerated or Grade Bumped like other not-so-strict Certification Companies may do.

After all, if you’re buying a VS2 Clarity Diamond, by all means, you should GET one!

Look at any Diamond with your naked eye really, really well before you buy it. Top View, Side View and Bottom View. See if you can spot any visible Flaws. Look at it with good light and scrutinize the Clarity. Then look at the same stone under 10x Magnification (Jeweler’s Loupe or Microscope).

Can you see the Flaws?

Do they match the ones drawn on the Diamond Plot which is on a Full Diamond Report?
They should!

That way, she won’t be looking at her beautiful 1.25 Carat Diamond and say “What’s this Black Spot in my Stone?“

That’s something you never want to hear, or explain why you bought a lower Clarity Grade.

Prepare yourself ahead of time by getting a little bit better Clarity to go along with that little bit bigger stone.

Just in case! :)

The bigger the Diamond Carat Weight is, the bigger the Flaws are!
