{"id":5731,"date":"2012-12-17T10:58:53","date_gmt":"2012-12-17T15:58:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/?p=5731"},"modified":"2015-06-04T11:17:56","modified_gmt":"2015-06-04T15:17:56","slug":"the-many-carat-weights-of-diamonds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/the-many-carat-weights-of-diamonds\/","title":{"rendered":"THE MANY CARAT WEIGHTS OF DIAMONDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"blog-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/The-Many-Different-Carat-Weights-of-Diamonds.gif\" alt=\"The Many Different Carat Weights of Diamonds\" title=\"The Many Different Carat Weights of Diamonds\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5733\" \/><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s no wonder that many people get confused with the Carat Weights of Diamonds.<\/p>\n<p>\nYou would think that there would be one <strong>certain consistency among Jewelers<\/strong> when it comes to listing and displaying how much a Diamond weighs. <\/p>\n<p>But Sadly, there are many, many different ways of saying it. <\/p>\n<p>\nYou have Carats, Weights, Points, Totals, and even <strong>Fractions<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><h2>FRACTIONS???<\/h2>\n<p>\n<strong>YEP!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nFor example, let&#8217;s look at a Half Carat&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><h2>1\/2 Carat Diamonds<\/h2>\n<p>\nHalf Carat Diamonds are just that, a Half of a Carat (<strong>One Carat being 100 Points<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>So a Half Carat would be 50 Points, or .50 CT.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nSounds simple enough, but it could actually be written in all of these different ways:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>Half Carat<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>50 Points<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>.50 Carat<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>1\/2 Carat<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>.50 CW<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>50 Pts<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>.50 DTW<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>0.50 DW T.W.<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>50\/100 Carat<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>1\/2 Ct<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>1\/2 CW T.W.<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>50 ct<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>.50 Carat TW<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>1\/2CTW<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>1\/2 Carats<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>0.50CT<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>1\/2 DW<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>0.50 DTW<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td><strong>50*<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>1\/2 tw<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>50 pt<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>And, because of the FTC Guidelines that allow Jewelers to have a 7-8 Point leeway, a .44 Carat Diamond could also be listed as a Half Carat!<\/p>\n<p>\nIt can get rather tricky explaining all of this to consumers.<\/p>\n<p>\nBut, Carat Weights break down just like money. A One Dollar Bill is made up of 100 Pennies. You could also use 4 Quarters or 2 Half Dollars to make One Dollar&#8230; Right? YES!<\/p>\n<p>\nEither way, <strong>it all adds up the same = One Dollar!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nWith Diamonds, there are 100 Points to a Full Carat (1.00 Carat). As you can see, they feature many different ways of listing <strong>Carat Weights<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Different-Kinds-Of-Diamond-Carat-Weights.jpg\" alt=\"Different Kinds Of Diamond Carat Weights\" title=\"Different Kinds Of Diamond Carat Weights\" width=\"640\" height=\"850\"><\/p>\n<p>But as long as you know how Weights break down, you&#8217;ll be able to understand all the lingo, letters, numbers and verbiage better.<\/p>\n<p><h2>But wait, there&#8217;s more&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>\nCT usually Means <strong>Carat<\/strong> (Usually referring to 1 Diamond).<\/p>\n<p>CT TW, CTW, CTTW usually means <strong>Carat Total Weight<\/strong> (all the multiple Diamonds in the ring added together).<\/p>\n<p>\nDW usually means <strong>Diamond Weight<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>\nDTW means <strong>Diamond Total Weight<\/strong> (same as CTW, all the Diamonds added together).<\/p>\n<p><h2>Disclaimers<\/h2>\n<p>\nSometimes you&#8217;ll see an <strong>asterisk<\/strong> next to the Carat Weights (i.e. .50CT T.W.<strong>*<\/strong>), that means there will be more info listed somewhere else on the brochure (usually the back page). The Fine Print generally says something to this effect &#8220;<strong>*Total Weight<\/strong>&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>Diamond Carat Weights are approximate<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>\nSo hopefully this clears up some of the confusion when it comes to Carat Weights and what Jewelers call them.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Get my point?<\/strong> :)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\"><p>It&#8217;s no wonder that many people get confused with the Carat Weights of Diamonds.
