You know it&#8217;s an SI1 because the salesperson tells you it is. That information was probably taken off the tag. But if the salesperson didn&#8217;t tell you the actual clarity, <strong>would you be able to tell?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nYou see, listening to a salesperson tell you what the clarity is, and really knowing and understanding it, are <strong>two totally different things<\/strong>. Would you know the difference?<strong> It&#8217;s almost scary to think about.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Take a look at the examples given below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>Test yourself:<\/h2>\n<p>\nSee if you can <strong>guess the correct clarity of each diamond<\/strong>. There are 9 images of <strong>diamond plots<\/strong>, they represent all different types of clarities. Those clarities will either be <strong>VS1, VS2, SI1, SI2, I1, I2, or I3<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>\nI won&#8217;t tell you how many of each group are shown &#8211; <strong>I don&#8217;t want to make it too easy<\/strong>&#8230;. (yeah right!) <\/p>\n<p>\nGood luck on <strong>choosing the correct clarity<\/strong> (write your answers down so you can check them afterwards).<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Diamond-Clarity-Test.gif\" alt=\"Diamond Clarity Guessing Game\" title=\"Diamond Clarity Guessing Game\" width=\"502\" height=\"505\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6665\" \/><\/p>\n<p><h2>Not easy is it?<\/h2>\n<p>\nOnly one of the images shown above is a <strong>VS1 clarity<\/strong> (#7), all the rest are either <strong>SI or I clarity<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>\nWith so many differences in the stones, you can see how it gets very difficult to judge if a clarity is high or low (even with only 7 clarities to choose from). <\/p>\n<p>\nFact is, most diamonds are rated by where the inclusions fall within the stone, <strong>how close to the center they are<\/strong>, and if they are hidden underneath the facets or not.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Here are the answers to the test:<\/h2>\n<p>\n<strong>1)<\/strong> SI2 <strong>2)<\/strong> I1 <strong>3)<\/strong> SI1 <strong>4)<\/strong> SI1 <strong>5)<\/strong> I1 <strong>6)<\/strong> I2 <strong>7)<\/strong> VS1 <strong>8)<\/strong> SI2 <strong>9)<\/strong> SI1<\/p>\n<p><h2>How did you do?<\/h2>\n<p>\nMost people would probably get at least <strong>half of these right<\/strong>, even if they are just <strong>guesses<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>See how tough it can be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nSee why there is so much <strong>controversy over clarity and ratings? <\/strong>Grading clarity is so <strong>opinionated<\/strong>. It&#8217;s not a perfect science.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Let&#8217;s try another test<\/h2>\n<p>\n<strong>Below are 3 images of diamond plots<\/strong>. I used these examples for a <strong>good reason<\/strong>. These clarities (SI2 &#8211; I2) are some of <strong>the most common clarities of diamond found in jewelry stores today<\/strong>. It falls right above the <strong>I clarity group<\/strong> and borders on <strong>eye-visible inclusions<\/strong> (fact is, from a side view you probably can see inclusions in an <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesallen.com\/loose-diamonds\/round-cut\/?Color=H,G,F,E,D&#038;Cut=Ideal,TrueHearts&#038;Clarity=SI2&#038;PriceFrom=200&#038;PriceTo=999000&#038;CaratFrom=1.00&#038;CaratTo=15.00&#038;Sort=Price&#038;Polish=EX&#038;Symmetry=EX&#038;Lab=GIA&#038;Flour=None?a_aid=JSDG\">SI2 diamond<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Since every single diamond is different<\/strong>, and inclusions and flaws will be of all different shapes, sizes, orientation, color, depth and placement, it gets pretty difficult for any one person to accurately judge a diamond&#8217;s clarity perfectly. <\/p>\n<p>\nEven GIA (<strong>the founders of the 4 C&#8217;s<\/strong>) use at least 3 diamontologists to grade each and every diamond. They arrive at a<strong> mutual agreement<\/strong> before it&#8217;s put on a <strong>diamond report<\/strong>. See, it&#8217;s not easy for anybody, <strong>even the experts<\/strong>. But it does get easier with practice.<\/p>\n<p><h2>Scope the diamonds:<\/h2>\n<p>\n<strong>Study the diamond plots. <\/strong>Look at all the different clarities and ratings. <strong>Compare them<\/strong>. View them from all different directions and even upside down in a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Edr9HQ\">microscope<\/a>. It&#8217;s the only way to <strong>truly test yourself<\/strong>. Learning hands on.<\/p>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Diamond-Clarity-Test4.gif\" alt=\"Diamond Clarity Test 4\" title=\"Diamond Clarity Test 4\" width=\"173\" height=\"183\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6668\" \/>Take a look at the image to the left.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>What clarity is this diamond?<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>\nCan you tell?<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Take a guess&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nDone? Good&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Here&#8217;s the answer:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>I3 clarity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nI3 clarity diamonds are the <strong>lowest possible clarity rating<\/strong> that any diamond could have. They are at the very bottom of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/diamond-clarity\/\">diamond clarity chart<\/a>. Looking at an I3 diamond will show you <strong>tons of flaws<\/strong>, lines, cracks, carbon spots, and clouds. To the bare eye it would look like <strong>black pepper in a cloud of murky salt<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p><h2>Not very pretty!<\/h2>\n<p>\nI3 clarity diamonds <strong>can take your breath away<\/strong>. &#8220;<strong>GASP!<\/strong>&#8221; Most people are shocked and stunned at what they see under a scope.<\/p>\n<p>\nBelow I3 clarity diamonds, are what they call &#8220;<strong>industrial diamonds<\/strong>&#8221; Industrial diamonds are those that are used in tools, drilling, sanding, and sawing (<strong>think dentist drills<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Here&#8217;s a list of clarity definitions and their meanings to help you better understand them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>Clarity grades:<\/h2>\n<p>\n<strong>FL &#8211; Flawless diamonds <\/strong>have no inclusions inside or outside the diamond whatsoever. You won&#8217;t see a thing under 10x magnification. Perfection.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>IF &#8211; Internally Flawless diamonds<\/strong> have no inclusions inside the diamond, but may have a few blemishes or naturals outside of the diamond (on the surface).<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>VVS1 &#038; VVS2 &#8211; Very, Very Slightly Included diamonds<\/strong> have very small inclusions. Dots. Pinpoints. Just tiny things. Very beautiful diamonds. Very rare. Very expensive.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>VS1 &#038; VS2 &#8211; Very Slightly Included diamonds<\/strong> may have small inclusions or blemishes inside and outside of the diamond. VS diamonds won&#8217;t have any black spots, cracks or fractures in the stone. Awesome diamonds. Simply stunning. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesallen.com\/loose-diamonds\/round-cut\/?Color=H,G,F,E,D&#038;Cut=Ideal,TrueHearts&#038;Clarity=VS2,VS1&#038;PriceFrom=200&#038;PriceTo=999000&#038;CaratFrom=1.00&#038;CaratTo=15.00&#038;Sort=Price&#038;Polish=EX&#038;Symmetry=EX&#038;Lab=GIA&#038;Flour=None?a_aid=JSDG\">My favorite clarity of all time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>SI1 &#038; SI2 &#8211; Slightly Included diamonds<\/strong> are those that have inclusions that are larger and easier to spot under a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Edr9HQ\">microscope<\/a> or a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2kwSI5G\">10x jeweler&#8217;s loupe<\/a>. Inclusions can be black carbon spots (although small), along with pinpoints, clouds and even small fractures (SI2 clarity can have eye-visible flaws).<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>I1 &#8211; I2 &#038; I3 &#8211; Imperfect clarity diamonds<\/strong> are the lowest clarity grades there are (I1 being the best of the 3 ranges: I1, I2 and I3). Imperfect diamonds usually all have eye-visible inclusions in them &#8211; diamonds that you can look at and see <strong>big black spots<\/strong>, long cracks, and fissures. A lot of I clarity diamonds will look so foggy that they appear solid white (like a piece of salt). Others will look like <strong>a jigsaw puzzle<\/strong> inside. I clarity diamonds lose sparkle and brilliance because light cannot pass through the stone. I clarity diamonds make up half of the diamonds on the market. But hey, <strong>at least they&#8217;re cheap.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\nHopefully in time you&#8217;ll get more comfortable viewing diamonds under 10x magnification. You may find that inclusions are a fascinating and intriguing world. I mean just think about it&#8230; <strong>It&#8217;s Mother Nature&#8217;s fingerprint.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><h2>Last test:<\/h2>\n<p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jewelry-secrets.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Diamond-Clarity-Test5.gif\" alt=\"Diamond Clarity Game Test 5\" title=\"Diamond Clarity Game Test 5\" width=\"173\" height=\"183\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6669\" \/><strong>Look at the diamond plot to the right<\/strong>. What clarity would you call this diamond? (<strong>It could be any clarity<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>Ready for the answer?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you chose <strong>SI1<\/strong>, then you&#8217;re in <strong>very good standing<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>\nSI1 clarity diamonds are one of the <strong>most popular clarity groups<\/strong> on the market. <strong>It&#8217;s wise to know them<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>\nSI1 clarity faces up very well. They are a <strong>very nice average quality diamond<\/strong> and usually don&#8217;t have too bad of a price tag either.<\/p>\n<p>\nOne grade higher than the SI1&#8217;s are the <strong>VS clarity groups<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>\n<strong>VS clarity is the best clarity to buy in my book<\/strong>. Very clean. Very sharp. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesallen.com\/loose-diamonds\/round-cut\/?Color=H,G,F,E,D&#038;Cut=Ideal,TrueHearts&#038;Clarity=VS2,VS1&#038;PriceFrom=200&#038;PriceTo=999000&#038;CaratFrom=1.00&#038;CaratTo=15.00&#038;Sort=Price&#038;Polish=EX&#038;Symmetry=EX&#038;Lab=GIA&#038;Flour=None?a_aid=JSDG\">I love VS clarity diamonds<\/a>. That&#8217;s why <strong>certification is always advisable<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nWith a certified diamond (<strong>preferably GIA<\/strong>) you can rest assure that the quality listed on the diamond report is<strong> the quality you bought<\/strong>. It just makes life so much easier. Certified or not, it&#8217;s always wise to <strong>double check the clarity under a scope<\/strong> anyway, just to be sure&#8230; <strong>You never know<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\nBeing able to tell what clarity a diamond is, takes <strong>time and talent<\/strong>.
