Here’s something that you won’t often hear me say: NO diamond color does not matter.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n(Quickly followed up by a post about How diamond color matters a lot. lol<\/strong>)<\/p>\n

\nSo why do I say it doesn’t matter?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Easy…<\/h2>\n

\nPeople can’t distinguish color with their eyes<\/strong>. It’s like skin tones on people. There are very subtle differences that makes it hard for the eyes to register.<\/p>\n

\nThe difference in “pure white<\/strong>” versus “off white<\/strong>” is very difficult to judge. Have you ever gone to a paint store and seen all the different hues of white?<\/p>\n

There’s thousands… And they all look white.<\/h2>\n

\nSome experts will find it hard to tell the true color of a diamond too because there are many factors that make grading color tough<\/strong>. Like…<\/p>\n

Clarity<\/h2>\n

\nA diamond that has a low clarity (like I1, I2, or I3<\/strong>), may have large clouds, spots and inclusions in the stone that can change and affect how a diamond visually looks and faces up. Plus, many flaws can stop light, darken the stone, and make the color <\/strong>stand out.<\/p>\n

Carat Weight<\/h2>\n

\nThe size of the stone makes a huge difference too. The bigger the carat weight, the stronger the color becomes<\/strong>. Hence, you can see more <\/strong>color in bigger stones. So a one carat diamond with J color may look much different than a J color in a 1\/4 carat.<\/p>\n

Cut<\/h2>\n

\nAnd then we have cut:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nIf the diamond is cut well (like excellent proportions<\/strong>), then that extra brilliance and sparkle that emits from the stone will cover up and mask <\/strong>the real color of the stone.<\/p>\n

\nIt makes it less obvious.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And… the mounting:<\/h2>\n

\nThe mounting also affects the color as well. A yellow gold mounting will hide a diamond with a yellow hue<\/strong>. You won’t really notice the color anymore. It blends in. Where if you put that same diamond into a white gold mounting, it may be easier to spot.<\/p>\n

Comparing stones:<\/h2>\n

\nSo unless you truly put two stones side by side to evaluate color, you’ll probably never know the difference<\/strong>. People usually don’t notice color unless it’s pointed out to them. And even then they really can’t tell…<\/strong> (although they will nod their heads like they do).<\/p>\n

\nOne may be able to tell if the color of the diamond is low<\/strong>, as in J-K-L-M color<\/strong>. Then it may look yellow.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nBut if you’re in the higher end of the near colorless range (G-H-I<\/strong>)… or higher, then color shouldn’t ever be an issue. <\/p>\n

\nSo every diamond of any color, will look different<\/strong> depending on all the other 4C’s. You really need to see them to make an accurate opinion.<\/p>\n

Popular Colors:<\/h2>\n

\nThe most popular diamond color range on the market<\/strong> is the near colorless range (for looks and price<\/strong>). In fact, almost all diamonds found on the market today have some sort of color to them (it’s very rare to find white-white diamonds<\/strong>). That’s just how nature works. It’s almost never perfect.<\/p>\n

So is color really that big of a deal?<\/h2>\n

\nNO!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nUnless you really want a pure white stone<\/a>…<\/p>\n

\nAnd then yes, of course. <\/strong>:)<\/p>\n
