In SI1 or higher, the flaws are “invisible” to the bare eye. In I1 clarity and lower, the flaws are “visible” and you should see them just by looking at the stone.

And then you have SI2…

SI2 sits right in the middle. It’s a nifty spot to sit because it’s a very affordable clarity. And for the most part, the Inclusions aren’t detected (unless you use a 10x jeweler’s loupe).

In fact, flaws in an SI2 diamond usually don’t show from the top view (looking straight down into the diamond). They are generally (and I say generally because some people have really good eye-sight) only apparent from the side view. Which is looking directly into the pavilion itself.

The most interesting thing about SI2 diamonds, is that there is such a wide variety of flaws and inclusions that reside in them. Some SI2 diamonds look more like SI1’s, while others look more like I1 clarity.

Compare the three diamonds below…

The first is SI2 (that looks like an SI1), the second is a normal looking SI2, and then the last is an SI2 that looks more like an I1 clarity stone.

SI2 – That looks like SI1 clarity

SI2 – That looks like a normal SI2 Clarity

SI2 – That looks like I1 Clarity

Crazy isn’t it?

These are ALL SI2 diamonds.

Keep in mind, all these diamonds shown above are viewed under 10x magnification… To the bare eye, they would probably all look the same.

And, if I were to guess, I’d say that you could put any of these stones up against an SI1 diamond and you’d never be able to tell the difference between them (unless, like I said, you microscoped them).

So in reality, SI2 is a great clarity to choose.

You’ll save a lot of money, and most people will never be the wiser. I mean, come on, how many people are going to grab your finger, yank it over, and look at the diamond from the side??? NO ONE!

So unless you tell them that it has inclusions, they’d probably never know.

And many other factors of a diamond affect how the inclusions look as well…

Some characteristics can actually mask those flaws even more.

Things like:

Diamond Cut

An excellent cut diamond can add more sparkle to the stone and hide flaws.

Smaller Carat Weights

A smaller carat weight can also make it very tough to spot inclusions because everything is, well, smaller.

The Mounting

The mounting can also cover up flaws and make them harder to see.

And lastly…

Keeping it Clean

If you keep your diamonds clean, it allows more light into the stone. This helps the diamond shine and reflect brilliance and fire back into the eyes of the viewer.

So yes, choose an SI2 diamond that faces up well under magnification (try to stay away from large black carbon spots if you can), get a diamond with an excellent cut (so it sparkles like crazy), and keep it clean.

You’ll be very happy with your choice, and you’ll save a big chunk of change.

Some great diamond examples can be found here at the James Allen website.

Just look at all the savings you can get when you buy a nice looking SI2.

Impressive, isn’t it?

Cheers! :)

Let’s talk about the flaws in an SI2 diamond.
