Let’s talk about the flaws in an SI2 diamond<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nSI2 clarity means that the diamond has small inclusions<\/strong> in the stone (slightly included is the official terminology<\/strong>). <\/p>\n

\nSI2 is the dividing line between “visible flaws”<\/strong> and “invisible flaws”<\/strong>. In SI1 or higher, the flaws are “invisible<\/strong>” to the bare eye. In I1 clarity and lower, the flaws are “visible<\/strong>” and you should see them just by looking at the stone. <\/p>\n

And then you have SI2…<\/h2>\n

\nSI2 sits right in the middle. It’s a nifty spot to sit because it’s a very affordable clarity<\/strong>. And for the most part, the Inclusions aren’t detected (unless you use a 10x jeweler’s loupe<\/a>). <\/p>\n

\nIn fact, flaws in an SI2 diamond usually don’t show from the top view (looking straight down into the diamond). They are generally (and I say generally because some people have really good eye-sight) only apparent from the side view<\/strong>. Which is looking directly into the pavilion <\/strong>itself.<\/p>\n

\nThe most interesting thing about SI2 diamonds, is that there is such a wide variety of flaws and inclusions<\/strong> that reside in them. Some SI2 diamonds look more like SI1’s, while others look more like I1 clarity.<\/p>\n

Compare the three diamonds below…<\/h2>\n

\nThe first is SI2 (that looks like an SI1), the second is a normal looking SI2, and then the last is an SI2 that looks more like an I1 clarity stone.<\/p>\n

SI2 – That looks like SI1 clarity<\/h2>\n

Crazy isn’t it?<\/h2>\n

\nThese are ALL SI2 diamonds.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nKeep in mind, all these diamonds shown above are viewed under 10x magnification<\/strong>… To the bare eye, they would probably all look the same.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nAnd, if I were to guess, I’d say that you could put any of these stones up against an SI1 diamond and you’d never be able to tell the difference<\/strong> between them (unless, like I said, you microscoped <\/strong>them).<\/p>\n

So in reality, SI2 is a great clarity to choose.<\/h2>\n

\nYou’ll save a lot of money, and most people will never be the wiser. I mean, come on, how many people are going to grab your finger, yank it over<\/strong>, and look at the diamond from the side??? NO ONE!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nSo unless you tell them that it has inclusions, they’d probably never know<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nAnd many other factors of a diamond affect how the inclusions look as well…<\/p>\n

\nSome characteristics can actually mask those flaws even more<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThings like:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Diamond Cut<\/h2>\n

\nAn excellent cut diamond can add more sparkle to the stone and hide flaws.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Smaller Carat Weights<\/h2>\n

\nA smaller carat weight can also make it very tough to spot inclusions because everything is, well, smaller.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Mounting<\/h2>\n

\nThe mounting can also cover up flaws and make them harder to see.<\/p>\n

\nAnd lastly…<\/strong><\/p>\n

Keeping it Clean<\/h2>\n

\nIf you keep your diamonds clean, it allows more light into the stone. This helps the diamond shine and reflect brilliance and fire back into the eyes of the viewer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nSo yes<\/strong>, choose an SI2 diamond that faces up well under magnification<\/strong> (try to stay away from large black carbon spots<\/strong> if you can), get a diamond with an excellent cut<\/strong> (so it sparkles like crazy), and keep it clean.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nYou’ll be very happy with your choice, and you’ll save a big chunk of change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nJust look at all the savings <\/strong>you can get when you buy a nice looking SI2<\/strong>. <\/p>\n
