Now it may be just me, but I think that those generic mother’s rings<\/strong> that you find in all the jewelry stores are just…<\/p>\n

Down right hideous.<\/h2>\n

\n(see picture) Most are cookie-cutter rings<\/strong> that lack any great thought or design.<\/p>\n

\nYou go into a jeweler to get that great mother’s day gift<\/a>, and they present you with a tray of brass sample mother’s rings<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThese rings have synthetic stones in them (You’ll have to imagine what ‘genuine<\/strong>‘ stones will look like)…<\/p>\n

So you see a dozen sample rings…<\/h2>\n

\nHalf of which are big and gaudy and ridiculous<\/strong> to think that any mother would want to wear.<\/p>\n

\nSo right off the bat, your choice goes down to about 6 rings<\/strong>. None of which are jumping out at saying “BUY ME!<\/strong>“<\/p>\n

\nNow some of the rings left, have ‘S’ link bars<\/strong> (see picture again — ‘S’ is for snag<\/strong>), some have straight bars, and most, sadly, just have a couple of small cheesy prongs<\/strong> holding in those small, 2-3mm stones. There’s so much I could talk about here, but I’ll try to stay on track.<\/p>\n

What’s left?<\/h2>\n

\nAbout 5 rings to choose from. One or two of these could probably be eliminated, because they don’t hold the right amount of stones<\/strong> you need. Be it, 1 stone or 8 stones, there’s a good chance that your choice of mother’s ring will now drop down to roughly 4.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now here’s the million dollar question:<\/h2>\n

\nIf a third of the city buys a mother’s ring at some point for some occasion, how many times will your lovely mother see her cookie-cutter ring<\/strong> on someone else’s hand?<\/p>\n

A lot!<\/h2>\n

\nDo you think she’ll be proud to wear it?<\/strong> Maybe. Proud to wear a ring that’s thin, lightweight and CHEAP<\/strong>? Ummm… A ring that with in a year she’d snag one of those rinky-dinky prongs and snap it off and lose a gemstone<\/strong>. Yeah! These rings are not made well<\/strong>. I see stones come out all the time.<\/p>\n

So what do some people do to spruce it up?<\/h2>\n

\nPeople spruce them up by adding more low grade gemstones<\/strong> to them…<\/p>\n

ARGGG!<\/h2>\n

\nAdding in parents and grandparents gemstones. They turn it into a “family ring<\/strong>“, but it’s still a cheaply made band with low quality stones.<\/p>\n

Really low…<\/h2>\n

\nThat’s right, those gemstones are usually bad quality<\/strong>. I mean, they’re small to begin with, so it’s not surprising that the blue Sapphires look black<\/strong>, or the Emerald has big inclusions, or the Ruby looks like Pink Tourmaline.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nWhat do you expect when you buy a ring for $100?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cheapness!!!<\/h2>\n

\nAlright, so some of you paid up to $300-400<\/strong> for it… Sure. It’s still cheap. And all the kids pitched in to buy it anyway. Even the kid with the black Sapphire.<\/p>\n

\nNo matter what though, do yourself a favor<\/strong>: don’t buy a generic mother’s ring<\/strong>. It won’t mean much, and she’ll have problems with the mounting, stones or prongs in the future.<\/p>\n

Mother’s Pendants:<\/h2>\n

\n\"Ugly<\/p>\n

\nNow you could go and buy a mother’s birthstone pendant<\/a> instead.<\/p>\n

\nFamily pendants, birthstone pendants<\/strong>, whatever you want to call them, can also be an eyesore…<\/strong> Depending on what you buy.<\/p>\n

People put all their kids birthstones in them and expect them to look good… Normally the gems don’t…<\/p>\n

\nLook at the picture and gasp…<\/strong><\/p>\n

Best plan of action?<\/h2>\n

\nThe best plan if you want to get your wife or your mom a mother’s ring is this…<\/p>\n

Custom design one.<\/h2>\n

\nNow it’s not as hard as you think. Your local jeweler will have tons of books and catalogs<\/strong> to choose settings from. And you can even look online at jeweler’s websites to get ideas. And check out Amazon <\/strong> while you’re at it, because they carry a wide variety of mother’s rings<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\nI would recommend free-form rings with beautiful curves<\/strong> and open areas. Places that you could set stones into. Most jewelers call them remounts or semi-mountings<\/strong>, but those usually have diamonds in the sides.<\/p>\n

\nAnd if you want to really spice things up, buy a ring with a large center diamond <\/strong>and set the birthstones <\/strong>around it or in channels down the side.<\/p>\n

How cool is that?<\/h2>\n

\nYou could even set the gemstones into the mounting so they are flush with the surface<\/strong> of the band.<\/p>\n

\nPlus there’s more fun things<\/strong> you can do with the stones…<\/p>\n

\nYou can set the gemstones into a channel-set band and alternate the stones<\/strong>, birthstone, diamond, birthstone, diamond.. it has a great look and it gives it a clean, classy, modern touch.<\/p>\n

Birthstone order:<\/h2>\n

\nYou can always put the birthstones in order of oldest child to youngest,<\/strong> and have the stones actually start bigger and taper down. Graduate the size of them<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Get creative:<\/h2>\n

\nDo something special and custom design a great looking ring<\/strong>. Any good jeweler can help you choose what’s best for your stones.<\/p>\n

Genuine vs Synthetic:<\/h2>\n

\nI would highly advise going with genuine birthstones verses synthetic<\/strong> also. Genuine stones for the most part, will last a lifetime<\/strong>. Synthetic stones just scream dull and cheap. They’ll fade, scratch and break easily. ‘CRUNCH<\/strong>‘ Oops, we lost March!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nAnd there are a couple of more points I’d like to make about genuine gemstones<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

\nIf you have a June birthstone, use the created Alexandrite<\/a> instead of a Pearl<\/strong>. A Pearl, being round, won’t match the other gems<\/strong> because they are flat and faceted. Plus Pearls come loose and break<\/strong>. Put in the created Alexandrite and everything will look awesome together. Plus it’ll last longer.<\/p>\n

\nAnd if you have an October birthday, use the Pink Tourmaline<\/a> instead of the Opal. Opals are so brittle that the stone will surely break within a year or two<\/strong>. It doesn’t take much to accidentally hit it and shatter the stone<\/strong>. Plus…<\/p>\n

Pink Tourmalines are prettier.<\/h2>\n

\nAnd now, one final note about making a real mother’s ring<\/strong> and not an ugly one… If you have any April birthstones and can swing it, buy a real diamond instead<\/strong> of the CZ (Cubic Zirconia… A.K.A. FAKE DIAMOND<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

\nThe CZ is what most jewelers will slap in to the mother’s rings for April. I know a genuine diamond costs more, buy hey, that’s what you get for having an April baby.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nWith genuine birthstones, a custom band, and a one of a kind<\/strong> piece of jewelry, she’ll be glad that the blue Sapphire in her mother’s ring, actually looks blue.<\/strong><\/p>\n
