Everyone loves channel-set diamonds.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nIf you don’t know, channel set diamonds are diamonds that are set down into the mounting by channeled walls<\/strong> (see pictures).<\/p>\n

\nThe diamonds in channel settings are set almost flush and in a straight line (or curved) so you don’t have to worry about prongs or beads getting caught on things<\/strong> like hair or clothing.<\/p>\n

No snagging.<\/h2>\n

\nNurses buy channel set anniversary bands all the time because they don’t have to worry about wicked prongs that catch their patients.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

\nAnd what’s so cool about these types of bands is the fact that you can wear these rings by themselves, or with an engagement ring. <\/p>\n

They’re awesome!<\/h2>\n

\n<\/strong>Channel settings won’t ruin your clothes or rip your panty hose.<\/p>\n

\nWomen love everything about channeled diamonds… After all, they are one of the cleanest, classiest ways<\/strong> to set stones. Not to mention the safest.<\/strong> Diamonds that are set into these mounting are very protected<\/strong>. It’s tough to knock one of the diamonds out of the mounting. <\/p>\n

\nBut still, channel set diamonds can be a big headache and a huge nightmare<\/strong>. Here’s why…<\/p>\n

Less sparkle.<\/h2>\n

\nDiamonds that are set low in the mounting get less light<\/strong>. Less light means less sparkle<\/strong>. Less sparkle means darker diamonds<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nAnd channel settings make it tough to clean the diamonds<\/strong> as well. Dirt and crud gets trapped underneath the diamonds and often it’s an impossible feat to get them clean again. Jewelers sometimes leave rings set in ultrasonic cleaner<\/a> for hours just to clean them again. But dirty, dark, diamonds are hardly a nightmare<\/strong>…<\/p>\n

So what is the real nightmare?<\/h2>\n

\nSizings!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Channels are not easy to size.<\/h2>\n

\nYou simply can’t bend a channel<\/strong> without loosening the diamonds or making them pop out of the mounting. Jewelers always have to double check the channels<\/strong> after working on a ring because they always need tightening<\/strong>. So word to the wise; make sure if you have your ring sized or repaired that you check the stones to make sure they’re tight.<\/strong> Sometimes it’s better to just special order a ring<\/strong> in the correct size to begin with (custom order it from the manufacturer <\/strong>versus getting a ring that doesn’t fit sized). You may avoid all problems<\/strong> doing it this way.<\/p>\n

Repairs:<\/h2>\n

\nIf you find that your stones are loose… Good luck! <\/strong>The only way to fix loose diamonds and gems in a channel is to push part of the channel wall over the stones<\/strong> to hold them in. So much for a straight looking channels<\/strong> (See photo below).<\/p>\n

\n\"Bad<\/p>\n

\nAnd it’s a good thing to check the channels BEFORE you even buy a ring!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nFor if you see jagged edges, rough walls, chunks of the channel pushed on top of the diamonds, uneven spacing between the diamonds, or overlapping stones, STAY AWAY!<\/strong> Channels like these could mean that the ring is refurbished<\/strong> or even a return<\/strong>. Overlapping diamonds usually mean the diamonds are too big<\/strong> for the channel or set wrong and could be crushed easily.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Buyer beware:<\/h2>\n

\nSo the next time you’re thinking about buying a diamond ring with channel set stones, do yourself a favor: <\/p>\n

\nTake a closer look, view them with a 10x jeweler’s loupe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Look at the channels and stones.<\/h2>\n

\nMake sure they look okay<\/strong> and straight.<\/p>\n
