Are you sure your diamond jewelry has real diamonds<\/strong> in it?<\/p>\n

\nBetter get out the microscope<\/a> or 10x jeweler’s loupe<\/a> and check. <\/p>\n

\nYou’d be surprised <\/strong>at how many have fake diamonds<\/strong> in them.<\/p>\n

Fake diamonds?<\/h2>\n

A lot of people think their jewelry is filled with beautiful diamonds, but come to find out, those aren’t diamonds, they are globs of gold.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes! That’s right.<\/h2>\n

\nGlobs or blobs of beaded white gold<\/strong>, that’s highly polished to reflect light (see picture).<\/p>\n

\nUpon closer inspection, you’ll see that what you thought were diamonds, are not<\/strong>. It all depends on the type of merchandise you bought, of course. But a lot, is not.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nYou see, lower quality<\/strong> jewelry, or lower priced jewelry is known for skimping on the goods. Cheap jewelry will often have thin sanks, thin prongs, low-grade gems (some are even chipped), and hollowed out mountings. <\/p>\n

\nLow quality jewelry, like rings, pendants and bracelets will usually be made of 10kt gold instead of 14kt gold<\/strong> as well.<\/p>\n

\nAnd one of the best and most efficient ways for manufacturers to cut corners, is to slack on diamonds.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nJewelry makers do neat little tricks, like setting in white gold plates<\/strong> that look like heads, and dabbing a glob of gold in the center of it to resemble a diamond. <\/p>\n

At a quick glance, it does look like something is there. But usually they’re so small, it’s hard to tell the difference. <\/p>\n

\nOne good way to hide this disappearing act, is to throw in a couple of real diamonds<\/strong> in the mix. Alternate the diamonds and globs<\/strong> gives the illusion of diamonds everywhere.<\/p>\n

Does it fool?<\/h2>\n

\nThey do this in rings, earrings, pendants and even tennis bracelets of lower quality. So does it really fool people?<\/strong> Yes, it does. <\/p>\n

\nIt makes the jewelry sparkle, shine and of course sell<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nBut the real purpose, is just to cut down the cost.<\/p>\n

Fraud?<\/h2>\n

\nNo! Not in the least<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nThey’re not hiding the fact that it’s a blob of gold. After all, you wanted a piece of jewelry for a low price… you got it. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\nOne good thing, if it fooled you, it’ll fool others as well. When it comes to cutting costs, every trick in the book is used.<\/p>\n

\nAnd even though most of these jewelry items do have genuine diamonds, they are normally quite small and very low quality<\/strong>. Plus most are single cut diamonds<\/a> (that’s diamonds with just a couple of facets on them). <\/p>\n

\nAnd when I talk about small diamonds, I mean it.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

\nGenerally they are only a couple of points a piece<\/strong>. But by adding in these couple points of diamonds, it gives the jewelers the opportunity to list the jewelry as “diamond<\/strong>“… and also markup the price.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nSo if you’re in the market for diamond accessories, make sure you microscope<\/a> or loupe<\/a> the jewelry before you buy it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nOtherwise, you may get stuck paying for globs of gold instead.<\/strong><\/p>\n
