Guys always ponder this one.<\/p>\n

\nDo you give your fianc\u00e9 the diamond appraisal<\/strong> when you give her the engagement ring?<\/p>\n

“Here’s your appraisal honey.”<\/h2>\n

\nMy first instinct would be to ask why?<\/p>\n

Why does she need it?<\/h2>\n

\nIs she asking for it?<\/strong><\/p>\n

For what reason?<\/h2>\n

\nOr are you just wondering if she needs the paperwork?<\/p>\n

Lots of paperwork…<\/h2>\n

Chances are, you have a lot of that paperwork:<\/strong> receipts<\/strong>, warranties, guarantees<\/strong>, extended service plans, diamond certificates<\/strong> and of course, the jewelry appraisal!<\/p>\n

\nMost engagement rings will come with an envelope full. That’s if it’s offered and if the jeweler is doing their job.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nSo this is my thinking… If you bought her a beautiful ring, then it shouldn’t bother you in the least showing her the appraisal (unless there’s something about it you want to hide… like the price you paid<\/strong>). <\/p>\n

\nBut no matter, the appraisal doesn’t list the sales price<\/strong> anyway. The appraisal only lists the full retail value of the ring<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nWhich is good, she won’t know how much you really spent for it (appraisals are usually double what you paid for it).<\/p>\n

Show it later?<\/h2>\n

\nIf it were me, I would show it to her later. That night, the next night… a week later… <\/p>\n

\nShe’ll be excited to see it and learn all about her pride and joy<\/strong> (so she can tell everyone else what it is). She may have tons of questions about it.<\/p>\n

\nShe’ll definitely want to know if it’s a one carat.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nThat’s always high on the list… She’ll want to know the color<\/a> and clarity<\/a> and all the other good details (her friends will ask questions<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

This can be educational for her, and you may have some fun teaching her all you learned in the process. It’ll make you look like you did your homework. You can be the diamond guru<\/strong> (unless you bought her a really bad diamond with poor color and clarity<\/strong>. Then forget it. The wedding’s off<\/strong>… lol).<\/p>\n

Diamond certificate:<\/h2>\n

She should see the jewelry appraisal<\/strong>, and she should also get the diamond certificate<\/strong> as well. That’s a very important piece of laminate (more important than the appraisal) that lists all the technical aspects of the diamond like cut<\/a>, color<\/a>, clarity<\/a> and carat weight<\/a> (read more about GIA certified diamonds<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The jewelry appraisal should list all these diamond attributes as well. And in fact, most appraisals will attach a copy of the diamond certificate<\/strong> to the report for you. That way, you can just turn in a copy of it to your insurance company<\/strong>, and get it insured<\/strong> (which is a must<\/strong>. Don’t neglect <\/strong>that).<\/p>\n

Keep the originals:<\/h2>\n

\nKeep the original paperwork, appraisals, certificates, warranties, receipts<\/strong>, locked up in a fireproof safe<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\nIf something happens to her ring, you’re going to want to know exactly where all that info is.<\/p>\n

\nI wouldn’t go out of my way to show her the receipt (not yet at least), but if it’s tucked away with the rest of the paperwork, chances are good she’ll eventually see it<\/strong>. So hopefully you spent enough to keep her happy. Seeing a $150 price tag may not go over so well. <\/p>\n

\nA normal recommendation is 2 months salary<\/strong> (read: Why spend 2 months salary?<\/a>)<\/p>\n

Understanding quality:<\/h2>\n

\nShowing her the appraisal and certificate is important. She needs to understand the quality of the diamond. She needs to be able to spot her diamond’s characteristics or inscription numbers under a microscope<\/a> or a 10x jeweler’s loupe<\/a>. That way, when she picks up her diamond ring from cleaning, repair, or sizing, she can tell if her diamonds been switched.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So knowledge is good.<\/h2>\n

\nAnd the paperwork gives her that.<\/strong> <\/p>\n

\nA $6,000 ring will make her happy for the rest of her life<\/strong>. A $600 ring may not…<\/strong><\/p>\n

\nJust think about this when you go out to buy her a ring… <\/p>\n

\nShe will <\/strong>see the paperwork someday.<\/p>\n

\nShe will find out the quality<\/strong> (so hopefully it’s not a CZ<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

\nShe will see the price<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And that’s a fact!<\/h2>\n
