Think about the interaction you had with the salesperson.

Were they confident?

Did they know what they were talking about?

Confidence really does make a huge difference when you’re shopping for jewelry or diamonds.

No one wants to deal with someone who stammers, scratches their head or doesn’t know the answer.

That can be frustrating.

“Let me find out…” every 2 seconds is not cool. They disappear behind the counter for ten minutes at a time. Can’t the person giving them the answers just come out and wait on you?

It gets really annoying.

Jewelry salespeople should know their product. They should be able to talk to you about it inside and out. Granted, there may always be a few questions that everyone will have to check on…

“What are the payments on this $8,500 diamond?“

Those are to be expected. But if your salesperson hesitates on:

“Is this diamond ideal cut?“

Then it may be time to deal with someone else.

The selling philosophy:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, inexperienced people should not be selling diamonds.

A lack of confidence and knowledge is a downer. Diamonds are a major investment of time and money. You don’t want someone that barely knows diamonds teaching you about them.

The jewelry stores that I’ve worked at all have the same philosophy:

New salespeople do not sell diamonds.

It’s true. They should steer clear of the diamond bridal cases all together. Those are left for the pros. New salespeople can wait on gemstone customers or show gold chains or watches, but not diamonds.

Harsh?

Maybe, but it involves way too much money to let a beginner fumble through it. We’re not talking about a couple of dollars, it’s more like a couple thousand dollars. Big difference.

If you got waited on by someone who knew very little about diamonds, you would probably walk right out the door. That jewelry store would, as a result of their confidence, turn you directly over to the competition. Not good at all.

So if you’re out shopping for diamonds and diamond rings, do me a favor, pay close attention to the salesperson.

Do they know diamonds?

Are they teaching you about cut, color, clarity and carat weight? Are they enthusiastic? Passionate? Confident?

Confidence sells diamonds.

If you ask what the table percentage of a diamond is, they should be able to tell you (after all, it is listed right on the diamond report). If you ask if the stone is spread, or if the diamond has fluorescence, they should know.

It’s confidence.

Only buy diamonds from experienced diamond salespeople. Experience will teach you plenty. It will teach you about inclusions under a microscope. You can compare them. Experienced people can show you Certifications and Laser Inscriptions. They’ll teach you the 4C’s, facets, fire and brilliance.

It will make buying a diamond a joy.

Confidence makes you feel comfortable, not awkward. It helps you make more educated buying decisions. It guides you in the right direction.

If the salesperson says “I don’t know“, then maybe it’s time to go.

Confidence builds trust:

If you trust your salesperson, chances are, you trust the jeweler. The two go hand in hand.

If I was spending thousands on a diamond engagement ring (like at James Allen here), I would want to buy from the most knowledgeable salespeople I could. After all, it is a once in a lifetime purchase.

So always buy from an establishment where the employees help you. Professionals. The people that can handle any question thrown at them:

“Why does this diamond have no culet?”

“How large is the girdle?”

“How many facets are on a brilliant cut diamond?“

“What’s a single cut?“

Diamond training 101:

Good jewelers train their staff well. They make sure they have the experience and confidence in handling diamonds. If you ever run into a salesperson that can’t clip a diamond in a pair of tweezers… Think twice before you buy from them. Are they showing you how to use a jeweler’s loupe? Are they explaining the 4C’s? If not, walk away.

Find a jeweler who is qualified.

Good jewelers and great salespeople know their diamonds. They love to show them, talk about them and explain them. They will show you the differences in stones and compare them so you understand.

And once you are able to do that, then you’ll know that you’re getting the best deal possible.

Because confidence saves you money.

Cheers! :)

Confident or NO?
