Does certified guarantee price?<\/h2>\n

\nIt’s a good question<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nThe short answer is:<\/strong> NO! <\/strong><\/p>\n

The long answer is:<\/strong> YES! <\/strong><\/p>\n

To begin with, we need to decipher what “guaranteed price<\/strong>” means.<\/p>\n

The myths:<\/h2>\n

\nTo some, guaranteed price means that the diamond is worth the price on the price tag<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Others believe that the price of a certified diamond is what you’ll get for that diamond if you were to sell it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Still others feel that if a diamond certificate has a price listed right on the report, that means the price is guaranteed to never lower in value<\/strong>. The diamond will always be worth the stated price.<\/p>\n

None of these are true.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Diamonds have no guaranteed price.<\/h2>\n

Certified or not, diamond prices will always fluctuate with the diamond market.<\/p>\n

That certificate means nothing when it comes to price<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\nSome certificate companies (like GIA – The Gemological Institute of America) never<\/strong> put a dollar amount on the diamond they grade. They grade a diamond based upon the cut<\/a>, color<\/a>, clarity<\/a> and carat weight<\/a>, but never by price.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Other certificate companies (like the EGL Gem ID Card <\/strong>shown below) will put a retail value on their report<\/strong>. Maybe this makes it appear more factual<\/strong>?

BUT… That price still means nothing.<\/h2>\n

A price listed on the diamond report does not mean that the diamond is really worth that value<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It just means, that is what they want to sell the diamond for<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Diamond prices go up and down daily. No price is sealed in stone<\/strong>. One day a diamond could be worth $1,000, and the next it could be worth $900. You never know<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Certificates should not reflect price.<\/h2>\n

\nBeing certified should never have any bearing upon price.<\/p>\n

Diamond prices are determined by the average price of diamonds across the country. This is usually done by a company called Rapaport <\/strong>who issues a monthly Rapaport Diamond Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Anytime you take a diamond in to sell, jewelers pull out this list to see what that diamond is actually worth.<\/p>\n

What certified really means.<\/h2>\n

A certified diamond means that the diamond has been graded by an independent certified diamond laboratory<\/strong>. These labs verify the quality (The 4 C’s<\/a>) of the diamond and show it on the report.<\/p>\n

That’s all!<\/h2>\n

\nIt’s their opinion about quality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

It doesn’t guarantee price.<\/strong><\/p>\n

So why do I say in the beginning that certified diamonds do<\/strong> guarantee price?<\/p>\n

It’s simple…<\/strong><\/p>\n

You know what the real quality is.<\/h2>\n

Once you verify what the true quality is of a diamond, then shopping around and comparing price becomes easy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This means, if you’re comparing a certified VS1 clarity diamond, you will be paying for a VS1 clarity diamond<\/a>. Not an exaggerated<\/strong> (grade bumped<\/a>) quality that could be an SI1 clarity instead. So in fact, being certified does<\/strong> to some extent guarantee price.<\/p>\n

It keeps you from spending more money than you should for a diamond. It keeps you from getting ripped off<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A certificate guarantees that the price you’re paying is for the exact quality you’re getting.<\/p>\n

\nNothing more. Nothing less<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The bottom line:<\/h2>\n

Always buy your diamonds certified.<\/strong> I recommend GIA, VS2 or better, D,E,F color, and excellent cuts, polish and symmetry.<\/a><\/p>\n

Compare diamonds with like<\/strong> quality and certificates to find the best deal. <\/p>\n

For example:<\/h2>\n

\nCompare a GIA certified, VVS2 clarity, F colored diamond<\/a> to a GIA certified, VVS2 clarity, F color. Same certificate<\/strong>. Same quality<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Never buy a diamond based upon any dollar amount listed on a report.<\/p>\n

Price is determined by the 4C’s. Everything<\/strong> is taken into consideration, cut<\/a>, color<\/a>, clarity<\/a> and carat weight<\/a>. Along with things like: fluorescence<\/a>, symmetry<\/a>, polish, proportions, percentages and enhancement<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So if you’re shopping for diamonds, always buy certified.<\/strong> Buy laser inscribed diamonds if you can (not all certified diamonds are laser inscribed). Doing so will give you great peace of mind<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

And that is guaranteed.<\/h2>\n
