2 carats are BIG.
A big carat weight with an even bigger impact… “OMG, look at your ring!”
It’s a showpiece!
Two carat diamond rings (mostly for engagement rings) can mean two totally different things.
Some people will instantly think a solitaire, a 2 carat round brilliant cut diamond, like so…
But for others, it could be a 2 carat total weight diamond engagement ring, like these:
These rings look huge because of all the smaller stones and mounting.
Either style you choose is perfectly fine.
2 carats is 2 carats.
The price difference between these though, could be enormous.
Compare a 2 carat wedding set vs a 2 carat solitaire:
CARAT, CLARITY, COLOR, CUT, POL, SYM, FLUOR | PRICE | VIEW |
2.00 CTW Rose Gold Wedding Set | $3,699 | VIEW |
2.01, SI2, H, PRINCESS, EX, EX, NONE | $11,800 | VIEW |
That’s a pretty big difference!
So if you’re in the market for a 2 carat, there are some nifty tips and tricks to keeping the cost of a 2 carat diamond ring down.
Let’s go over them:
1) Clarity:
Most larger carat weights (really anything above 1 carat) are more than likely going to be I clarity (that’s I1, I2 or I3)…
I clarity means “included“, and has eye-visible inclusions. This is common and goes hand-in-hand with larger stones (Mother Nature is not perfect).
But not all diamonds look the same.
Some lower clarity diamonds face up extremely well, like a much higher clarity of diamond.
Just like this I1 clarity stone below, it looks like an SI diamond:
CARAT, CLARITY, COLOR, CUT, POL, SYM, FLUOR | PRICE | VIEW |
2.00, I1, J, EX, EX, VG, NONE | $7,240 | VIEW |
2) Light carat weight:
Carat weights vary, and if you buy shy (which is buying a few points under the 2 carat mark), you can actually save money.
Buying a diamond that’s 1.90, 1.94, 1.96 instead of 2.00 will lower the cost for sure:
CARAT, CLARITY, COLOR, CUT, POL, SYM, FLUOR | PRICE | VIEW |
2.00, SI2, G, EX, EX, EX, SLIGHT | $12,040 | VIEW |
1.96, SI2, G, EX, EX, EX, STRONG BLUE | $9,750 | VIEW |
3) Think fancy:
If you think outside of the “round“, you can save big bucks. The round diamond is the most expensive cut of diamond there is. So if you venture into princess cut, cushion cut, emerald cut, marquise cut… you can save hundreds of dollars.
Compare the costs below…
Keep in mind, these diamonds are examples that were good at the time of this post. The prices, sizes, and quality will vary depending on availability.
4) Break up:
Break the carat weight up. As I’ve already said, if you buy a ring that has multiple stones (not just one) that total 2.00 carats all together, your pocketbook will love you.
You can always go smaller in the center, like a 1.50 carat, and have it set with a half carat of diamonds around it (like shown below) and you get a big look for a much nicer price.
CARAT, CLARITY, COLOR, CUT, POL, SYM, FLUOR | PRICE | VIEW |
1.53, SI1, L, EX, EX, EX, STRONG | $5,240 | VIEW |
.48 Halo Mounting | $1,965 | VIEW |
So whatever your dream 2 carat is, you can always save greenbacks and still get that “WOW” moment.
Cutting clarity or color drops the pricetag a lot. But buying shy and looking at fancy helps make any engagement ring more affordable.
