5 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT CUT

DOES AN EXCELLENT DIAMOND CUT REALLY MATTER?

3) GIA’s New Cut Grades!

GIA, the Gemological Institute of America, the founders who designed and devised the 4C’s, came up with new cut grades for brilliant cut stones that really improved customer knowledge about the topic.

Before these new grades, jewelers relied heavily on the Table and Depth Percentages, which often went by the 60/60 rule of thumb. This was approx. 60% Table Width and 60% Diamond Depth. As seen here…

60 Percent Table 60 Percent Diamond Depth

But the 60/60 rule was difficult for customers, and even jewelers to decipher. Especially since you also had to look at the girdle thickness, crown angles, table width, proportions, percentages… And it was confusing and difficult to comprehend, let alone determine if the diamond was cut well.

And the main reason that diamonds aren’t cut well to begin with is simple:

PROFIT!

Diamond cutters maximize the parent rock so they can make the most amount of profit from it.

Who can blame them?

But it left diamond cut all over the board

GIA changed all that!

They made learning cut easy. For everyone!

At just a glance you can NOW see how a diamond is cut.

P.S. The BEST cut grades are triple excellent stones
