If that Title Confuses you, you’re not alone…

It’s a Crazy Concept to Comprehend!

You see, when I say “There is no ‘D’ in Diamonds“, of course I’m not talking about the actual word “Diamonds“, those have Double D’s…

What I’m talking about is Diamond Color!

D Color that is

And Before I go any further, let’s take a Moment and Peek at the Diamond Color Grading Chart…

It starts at D, and goes all the way down to Z…

Now, back to that D!

D is at the Very Top of the Color List. It’s the Best Diamond Color there is in the World.

Nothing Beats it

D Color is Pure White, Ultra-Bright, Very Rare, and Very Expensive.

But, I’m here to tell you…

That’s not Entirely True…

There is NO True D Color!

Impossible, you say?

It’s the Truth. Think about it. Since there is No Color Higher than D (It truly is the Cream of the Crop), and Color is always a Range of Hues and Body Tones (Like Everything Born in Nature), then D too has a Color Shift and Range. As an Example, look at G Colors… A G Colored Diamond could Lean more Towards an F Colored Stone, or it could lean the other way and look more like an H.

D is the same way…

Not all D’s will look Identical.

Some will be Whiter!

Some will Appear just a Tad Bit Brighter in Hue.

That’s because Color is Subjective, and it may not be 100% Consistent. Just when you think you’ve seen the Whitest Stone, there’s another.

That’s why there is No Real D when it comes to Diamond Grading.

D Varies

So if there’s No True D, then how are D Grades Determined?

Easy!

Any Diamond Color that’s Higher than an E, Automatically becomes a D.

That’s exactly what Diamond Graders look for. They Compare a Diamond’s Color to a Master Set of Stones, and if the Diamond in Question is Whiter than an E Colored Diamond, then it gets the Grade of D.

In Fact, those Master Stones don’t even have a D Color… The highest they give you is E. So If it’s Whiter than E… It’s a D!

No If’s, And’s, or D’s

Weird, isn’t it?

But it all Makes Good Sense.

D is D… As long as it’s Better than E. :)

And that’s how you Grade D Colored Diamonds.
