A Diamond is a Diamond no matter Where you Buy it

It’s True!

It doesn’t matter where you buy your diamond from… Cartier, or a guy off the street

They can both be the exact same diamond.

And what do I mean by this?

That you can truly get the same quality, certified or not, no matter where you buy it (and possibly the same price).

It doesn’t matter!

Because a diamond is a diamond. Period!

The DNA of a diamond is 100% pure carbon. It’s the exact same DNA as any other genuine diamond. Meaning yes, a diamond you buy at some little rinky-dink dime jeweler, can be the same exact thing you buy at a huge nationwide chain store.

A Diamond is a Diamond no matter Where you Buy it

Diamonds are diamonds

What makes these diamonds different are their traits and characteristics.

That’s how you separate the good diamonds from the bad.

Whether they’re GIA certified, EGL, AGS, IGI, Tiffany… you can get the same kind stone… If you know what to look for:

  • Color
  • Clarity
  • Carat Weight
  • Cut

The 4Cs of Diamonds

Well, okay, you’ll also need to delve a little deeper than that to really compare.

You’ll also need to look at symmetry, polish and fluorescence as well:

If you know how to look for all of these things, then it doesn’t matter where you buy it, or who certified it

Let me repeat;

IF you know what to look for!

Which, by just glancing at a diamond, that’s almost impossible to do. Some things will require special tools and equipment and the proper lighting to get the correct grades.

And even glancing at a diamond report (a.k.a. certificate) doesn’t always help either. Because some certificates are lax, inaccurate, grade bumped, and downright WRONG!

Which is why I always say… Stick to GIA!

GIA or AGS… These grading companies are the best and the most strict and accurate in their field.

Certified Diamond Reports

Companies like IGI, EGL, and Gemex, are more loose when it comes to grading (as well as confusing). Their reports are not so factual and could be off by whole grades or more. Meaning; you may think a stone is a better quality than it is. Also meaning; you paid too much for that stone!

But still, you don’t really need the paperwork…

You can judge a stone with your own eyes, as well as look under a microscope. If it looks yellowish (turn the stone over and look through the side or base), then it’s probably a lower color diamond (like K, L, M, N). If it looks white, it’s probably (more than likely) a near-colorless or a colorless diamond, since they are the most popular color ranges on the market.

If the stone has visible flaws (using no magnification or 10x jeweler’s loupe), then it’s a lower clarity like I1, I2 or I3 clarity. But if you don’t see any flaws (inclusions, black spots, clouds, feathers, fractures, chips) with the bare eye, then it’s probably SI clarity or higher.

If the stone looks dark or dull, with little or no sparkle, then the cut is bad (poor make). If it’s sparkling like crazy, the cut is probably good, very good, or excellent!

Judging diamonds gets easier the more you do.

And by comparing different quality of stones side by side, you can usually pick out the better ones. A good way to compare diamonds is to go to James Allen and select two diamonds; I1 clarity, and VS1 clarity, and put them side by side

Comparing VS Clarity to I1 Clarity Diamonds

CARAT, CLARITY, COLOR, CUT, POL, SYM, FLUOR PRICE VIEW
.32, VS1, G, EX, EX, EX, NONE $720 VIEW
.30, I1, F, EX, EX, EX, NONE $420 VIEW

This is a Huge Eye-Opener!

You can visibly see a difference!

Viewing magnified diamonds can really show you the sparkle, the appearance (like arrow patterns in the stone), the color, and all of the imperfections

But it can’t tell you things like:

  • If the stone was laser drilled
  • If the stone was fracture filled
  • If the stone was heat treated (color enhanced)
  • If the stone has extra facets (specially cut diamonds, like the Leo diamond with 66 facets, versus the standard 57)
  • If the diamond is trademarked; like the Tolkowsky, Hearts on Fire, Tiffany, Astor Cut

These things can be ultra-important when it comes to price. And you may never know these things…

So even though I say that you can get the exact same diamond without certification

I don’t recommend it!

These things matter! If a diamond is laser drilled, fracture filled, or color enhanced, it can alter a diamond’s appearance and price. It makes them appear better than they really are (and sell for much more than they should)… An I1 clarity diamond could mimic a VS diamond and sell for thousands more!

So it’s vital to only buy diamonds that do come with diamonds reports like GIA.

And if you ask me what diamond quality I recommend, this quality here: SI1+, G-H+, Ideal Cut, No Fluorescence.

Low prices on diamonds

Buying certified gives you more guarantee that the diamond is genuine, and that the correct quality listed on the report is the diamond you get (and not laser drilled, fracture filled, or color enhanced).

And, if you shop at James Allen, you really will get the BEST prices around.

You can buy GIA certified diamonds anywhere you like, that’s true. But try to stick with reputable stores (and not some guy off the street).

Just to be sure!

(and safe)

Because a diamond is a diamond…

ALMOST!

See all the great quality of diamonds here at James Allen.

Cheers! :)
