Can You Size A Ring Multiple Times?

Is there a Limit?

Is there a Limit to how Many Times a Ring can be Sized?

Many People over the Course of their Life will have their Rings Repeatedly Sized. Sized Up. Sized Down…

Sized Up Again

People Gain Weight. Lose Weight. Get Pregnant. Diet… Your Body goes through changes all the time and many People Fluctuate 10-30 lbs in just a couple of Years. Rings that used to Fit Properly are now either Too Loose, or Way Too Tight.

Many people get Concerned about Sizing their Rings Repeatedly. They believe it will Damage the Ring or Hurt the Mounting. Are they Justified? Absolutely…

Limits to Sizings

So is there a Certain Amount of Times you can Safely Size a Ring Up or Down?

NO!

There is No Limit!

You can have it Done as many times as you Desire. It really all Depends on your Ring and whether it can Stand up to another Sizing Job.

If your Ring is Heavy, Thick, and Durable, then there should be No Problems in taking the Ring up or Down again.

But if your Ring is Light-Weight, and Thin, you may have some Issues!

The Sizing Process

Sizing Rings is done by Cutting the Shank in one Spot or two Spots, so you can Bend the Band in or out (Reshaping) Depending on if you need it Sized up or down. After they get the Band to the Proper Size, they then have to Resolder the Joint, File, Smooth and Polish the Piece up again.

Many times this does Remove a Very Tiny Amount of Metal in the Process.

That’s to be Expected, there is no way around it.

Jewelers have to Cut, File, and Polish the Ring so the Seam Blends Nicely and isn’t Noticeable. They then Polish up the Band so it looks Brand New again. All of this does Remove a Thin Layer of Metal (Gold, Silver, Platinum).

Thin Shanks get Thinner

So a Thin Shank may be Thinner than when it began. And if you Repeatedly Resize this Type of Ring, then YES, it may Harm the Structure of the Ring. It could Weaken and Hurt the Band. It could cause the Shank to become so Thin that it just Bends and Breaks too Easily.

In this Particular Instance, it would probably be Wise to have a New Shank put on the Ring. Beef it up.

So in most Cases, no it doesn’t Harm the Mounting. But sometimes, it’s Unavoidable and the Band will get too Thin to Work with. You may have no Choice but to Fork out the Money for a Thicker Shank.

Shanks are Not Cheap!

This could get Quite Costly as well. New Shanks could run you $100-$500 or more Depending upon the Width, Thickness and the Type of Metal used.

Harm to the Stones

One other thing that Jewelers will have to be Careful with, are the Gemstones or Diamonds.

Some Gems take Heat well, while others don’t. Stones will have to be Protected from the Torch, and some will have to be Totally Removed from the Mounting (which will even Cost you More Money).

So Sizing the Rings up or down might not Harm the Integrity of the Mounting, but if they’re not Cautious enough, or if the Jeweler does a Sloppy Job, it could put Risk on the Actual Stones.

This is why I always say, Check for Chips or Damage to the Stones when you Pick up your Ring… While you’re still at the Jeweler! (Not After!)

You never know. A Chipped Diamond is Quite Rare, but it does and can happen.

And the last thing you want is for it to happen to YOU!
