Chains You Can Sleep In

To Sleep, Perchance to Dream

A lot of People Sleep in their Jewelry. I know this because I Repair a lot of Jewelry.

The Number One Item to Repair?

Chains!

Customers say “I Never Take my Chain off. I Sleep with it on and now it’s Bent and Kinked. Can it be Fixed?

The Good News is YES, Most Chains CAN be Fixed, Soldered and Repaired. Some will look Good, others Not so Good.

Like these Chains that you Shouldn’t Sleep in:

  • Herringbone Chains
  • Omega Chains
  • Bead Chains
  • San Marco Chains (looks like Macaroni)

These Chains are the Worst Offenders to Wear to Bed. Basically, anything Flat, or anything that has Little Give or a Short Bending Point. These types of Chains will Kink Up, Bend, Break, and Snap in Half if taken too far.

See image below of Chains that normally don’t make it through the Night.

If yours does… you’re the lucky one.

Don't Wear These Chains To Bed

Once a Chain is Kinked or taken beyond the Bending Point, it Pretty Much Ruins it. They are Difficult to Repair, you’ll probably see where they Fixed them at, and they’ll always be Weak in that Spot again. Not Cool!

What Chains do I Recommend?

So what Chains do I Recommend to Buy? If you Wear your Chains to Bed, there are a Few Great Choices that I would point out:

Buy These Chains Instead

  • Rope Chains
  • Box Chains
  • Figaro Link Chains
  • Curb Link Chains (Cuban)
  • Wheat Chains
  • Mariner Link Chains (Gucci)
  • Anchor Link Chains
  • Cable Link Chains

Chains you CAN Sleep in!

You may notice that Most of the Recommended Chains are Link Chains! :)

Good Eye!

The Bending Point

The Biggest Reason why is the Fact that Link Chains are Durable Enough to Handle Tossing and Turning, and they are Flexible and Loose Enough to Move around. They don’t get Caught, Snagged, or Bent like other Chains do, and they don’t have a Short Bending Point (You can Carefully Test this Point by Slightly Bending a Chain and seeing how Far you can take it without Going Beyond the Give).

That’s the Breaking Point!

Most of these Chains will go far without Creating any Damage. Just don’t Harm your Chain in the Process though! :) And also Realize that Most Chains do have some sort of a Bending Point, but you really have to Fold the thing in half for them to give.

Link Chains are Loose enough to Lay on, and Pendants or Sliders shouldn’t Bother Them Either. Just Stay Away from Flat Chains (like Herringbone), these Kink in a Second!

Hollow Chains are a No-No!

Also, Stay Away from Hollow Chains. Hollow Chains can Cave in or Pop out of the Socket.

My Favorite Chains from the list: Wheat Chains and Cable links. I Love Them!

I Like a Durable Chain

I can’t Stand those Little Frail, Wimpy Chains that Break if a Baby pulls on them. Why put an Expensive Diamond on a Chain that will Break in a Heart Beat? Spend a Couple of Bucks and Upgrade to something More Durable.

With a Nicer Chain you can Sleep in them with no Worries, Every Night.

Sweet Dreams! :)

P.S. Stainless Steel Chains and Titanium Chains are also a Great Contenders. They are Very Durable and should Hold up Quite Well.

2 More Things I would Note:

1) I prefer 14k or 10k Gold Chains (White or Yellow), because they look Great and are Durable enough for Every Day Wear. 18k Gold or Higher Content is Softer and could Break, Pull, Bend or Kink Easier, so I don’t Recommend those.

2) Buy Solid Chains! Solid Chains Break less than Hollow Chains. Hollow Chains are Hollowed out on the Inside. They are Very Light Weight, and give the appearance of a Big Chain, but Aren’t. They can Crush, Dent, Ding, Bend and Break.

I Don’t Advise Them!

Hollow Chains may look Great, be way Cheaper, but they Won’t Last Very Long.

Cheers! Here’s to a Good Nights Sleep! :)

Hi I have a 20inch 9ct gold curb chain I would like to wear it all the time not take off is it ok

    • As long as the chain is solid (not hollow), and is thick enough to not bend, then it’s totally appropriate to wear it all the time. Just wipe it clean a couple of times a week with a jeweler’s cloth. -Richard
