Diamond Shape VS Diamond Price

You probably know by now that the round brilliant cut diamond is the most expensive cut of diamond there is.

This is simply because of demand; most people want one.

And, so it goes, that all of the other shapes (called fancy shapes) are less, and some by 50%.

Plus the carat weight also matters. For the jump between a 1/4 and a 1/2 carat is about double… But the jump between 1/2 and a full carat (1.00) can be triple or quadruple.

There are tons of factors that go into the price of each diamond; shape, cut, color, clarity, carat weight, polish, fluorescence, symmetry, visual aspect, certification, cost

So comparing shape and price is not easy.

The only way to do so is to compare exact same quality of stones. i.e. the same color, clarity, carat weight…

Plus, it also depends on what diamonds are in stock at any given time. You may not find exact qualities in every single shape (as seen below).

And every day the prices of these diamonds fluctuate. Some get sold, some added (meaning the same quality stones will have different costs), they change quickly, their rankings shift up and down. It becomes almost impossible to justify.

But we’ll try.

Below are diamonds of the same carat weight; 1.00-1.05, the exact same clarity; SI1, the same color; E

But here is where things get tricky:

You can’t compare the same cut. Only round brilliant cut diamonds get an actual cut grade by GIA. All the other fancy shapes get none. So you can’t compare cut to cut… What you can compare is polish, symmetry, and fluorescence (which I’ve done).

That’s the best we can do…

Also note, this is comparing SI1, E, 1 Carats (and the lowest prices are shown below). But if we opened up the search, searched for VS, E, or .95, or Very Good polish, things would change drastically. You’d see some stones are cheaper (even of better quality), and others are more expensive. Cost plays a huge role… So the purpose of this comparison is to see how shapes affect price today. Right now. How they rank.

Which shapes are priced higher?

Let’s find out

Note that some cuts only had a few diamonds in stock; Asscher, Heart… and Marquise cut had NONE. Today may be three, tomorrow there could be a dozen. Or one. The prices move with the market and Emerald cuts could be 2nd in line. You just don’t know until the day comes that you need to buy a diamond.

It’s all based upon availability and demand (and even location; where you buy it. What’s hot and what’s in trend could change prices as well). The exact quality helps narrow it down, but some qualities are more popular (like SI1, E, or VS2, G).

So no matter how you look at it. No matter the comparison or industry or store, one thing is for sure:

Rounds will always remain on top!
