Dont Buy These Diamond Stud Earrings

They’re HUGE!

Doing a search on Amazon, I ran into a pair of diamond studs that has to be the most expensive diamond studs online.

Ready for the price?

They’re $74,999.00

WOW!

And what’s even more insane is this:

The quality is not high!

Granted, just about all diamonds above 1 carat (especially in earrings) are either SI2, I1, I2, or I3. And these studs are just that: They are graded SI2-I1 clarity. Meaning, they could be one or the other quality (or both… Whatever stones they happen to have in stock). Also meaning; YOU WILL SEE INCLUSIONS IN THE STONES! That’s what Imperfect stands for; inclusions. Eye-visible flaws! It’s common in larger stones, and half of the diamonds in jewelry stores have them.

The color is J-K

J, K (not Just Kidding), is not a great color. J is at the bottom of the Near Colorless, meaning it will have a slight yellow tint to the diamond. And K is one step further down the color chart. K color could look really yellow!

This is all difficult to see from the photos they show… because they don’t show you the real diamonds! They are using sample stock photos that they use for all of their diamond studs sold. So you don’t actually see what it is you’re buying. If they did show you the real diamonds, you probably wouldn’t want them!

So what makes them so expensive?

4 things:

  1. They are GIA certified (comes with GIA diamond reports; one for each stone.)
  2. The cut is Ideal (Even though GIA doesn’t have an “Ideal” grade, only an “excellent” grade, which I’m assuming this is).
  3. The carat weight is enormous; 5 carats total weight.
  4. The mountings are Platinum with screw-backs.

Take a peek…

Biggest Diamond Stud Earrings Online

Let’s break this down further…

They have them listed as “Ideal” cut, but don’t say anything about the symmetry or polish grades. And usually if you’re buying GIA certified diamonds, you’d want to see the diamond reports (it goes hand in hand with buying diamonds, and that’s the real reason you’re buying certified; to see the independent verification!)

They don’t show you anything!

They don’t say squat about fluorescence either!

If they truly had 2 stones already picked out for sale, the info would be listed. But the fact that they leave it so open and vague, and don’t give you the diamond report numbers to check online, leaves this purchase a very mysterious and questionable buy.

And, from experience, if a store gives you a range of quality, it’s generally the lowest grade you’ll end up with (in this case, I1, K).

And the price?

$74,999.00? It seems quite high. That’s $37,499.50 per stone!

So let’s compare…

Going to James Allen (the lowest diamond prices online), and searching for these exact same quality of diamonds, brings up this:

250 Carat Diamonds GIA Certified

(SI2-I2, J-K, Round Brilliant Cut Diamonds)

Another WOW!

$12,000 a piece? That’s $24,000 for the pair of same quality diamonds (only $51,000 less than Amazon).

But let’s raise the stakes.

Let’s give these diamond dealers the benefit of the doubt. Let’s say for some reason that they did give you the HIGHEST quality of range listed (Which puts you at SI2, J, with “excellent” in cut… And going even further, let’s also give them “excellent” in both polish and symmetry, with no fluorescence, too!)

This is what you’d get:

250 Carat Diamonds SI2 J

(SI2, J, Round Brilliant Cut Diamonds)

That bumped the price up $8,000 to $32,000 each (still $43,000 less than Amazon).

Okay, but what about the Platinum mountings?

Platinum mountings with screw-backs would probably add another $500-$1,000 to the price tag. But even then, it would still leave those earrings selling for $42,000 MORE!

$74,999.00 is a ton of money to spend on earrings.

But… If you wanted to

What could you buy for that price?

For 75 grand, you could actually get a much, much higher quality of stone; VS1, G, with triple excellent grades in cut, polish and symmetry, and with no fluorescence.

Like these diamonds here:

250 CT Diamonds VS1 G

(VS1, G+, Excellent, Round Brilliant Cut Diamonds)

Those diamonds are selling on average around $38,000 each… And their quality is top-notch.

So if you’re looking for huge diamond stud earrings, don’t buy them from Amazon (unless you want to lose 40 grand), head on over to James Allen and design your own.

That way you’ll get premium diamonds, with no visible flaws, and save a ton of money at the same time.
