Emeralds are a green variety of Beryl (the same parent rock as Aquamarine). It’s one of the most sought out gemstones on Earth. It’s very rare, very expensive, and very difficult to find in any decent quality. Especially in those lovely deep dark shades of green.

And finding an Emerald without it’s natural birthmarks is almost unheard of (and really to be expected). That’s why most of the Emeralds you see in stores today are all lab-created; manmade.

Created stones tend to be ultra-clean (no inclusions), brilliant, beautiful, and even a tad bit transparent…

The Emerald Cut

Emerald Cuts are modern versions of the Step Cut, which was one of the first cut stones known to man.

It was easier to cleave and slice by hand back then, because it had few facets and NO CURVES!

Normally cut in a rectangular shape, you can also find these octagon shaped stones square as well.

The cut corners allow setting the stones into mountings with baskets and prongs much easier. The steps on the stones look like pyramid steps, and they give a gemstone great balance between light and dark contrast.

It’s Gotta be Clean

Because the Emerald Cut has fewer facets on the table, it shows flaws and imperfections much easier. Meaning, you’ll normally need a higher clarity stone or everything will show (really important when buying an Emerald Cut Diamond).

This is why lab created gemstones have become so popular (and cheaper than real Emeralds). They just look perfect and flawless.
