THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MEN BUYING ENGAGEMENT RINGS VERSUS WOMEN

This is crazy of course, something that doesn’t hold true for everyone.
But for the most part, it’s reality, and it’s what’s happening today.
Men and women shop so differently when they pick out an engagement ring.
Again, this is not the law on buying rings, there are always exceptions… but it’s my interesting opinion from working in the jewelry store for over 30 years.
How women shop:
- Try on tons of rings
- Pick out what’s pretty
- Doesn’t necessarily need to be a big center stone
- Sees what it looks like in a mirror
- Likes to compare rings side-by-side
- Concerned by price (not going overboard)
- Wants to get her girlfriends reaction
How men shop:
- Looks at the diamond chart
- Inspects the diamond certificate
- Is more interested in quality
- Wants to buy a diamond big enough that he doesn’t look cheap
- Goes over financing plans
- Views the stone under a microscope
- Puts the ring on his pinky to see how it looks
- Asks about the return policies, upgrades, exchanges, insurance
Again, don’t come at me, these are just fun observations that are closer to the truth than not.
Men will often go by the sales persons take, especially if it’s a female. And they may even ask other women customers to help them decide. And every now and then they even will bring their mom in to help them pick out the ring (and mothers are generally much more conservative than men would be).
Women will take pictures, compare diamond shapes, look online, try on different sizes, see how it feels on their fingers.
So it’s always fun to learn what’s important to each, and how they go about shopping for rings differently. Everyone has their own priority.
And then, as many folks do nowadays, the couple will actually come in together to pick out their rings. And when that happens, it usually always comes down to one thing:
The visual appearance
She wants it to look stunning, and wants it to stand out and sparkle (she may even be competing with her coworker’s ring).
Often she will pick out her favorite ring or rings, and then turn it over to him to talk about buying, paying or financing. This works. So the real test here is, does it make her smile from ear to ear?
The ring that makes her smile the most, where she can’t wipe the smile from her face, is the one to buy. That’s the one she really wants, the one she falls in love with. You can see it in her eyes, you can hear it in her voice. So pick up on these visual clues. They’re pretty obvious.
Because in the end, it’s not always about the biggest and the best. It’s what’s perfect for her. After all, it is her dream ring.

Cheers! :)
