Gametime…
I’m going to show you 6 round brilliant cut diamonds.
They are all different carat weights, colors, clarity and cuts.
Do you think you could pick which diamond is the most expensive from the bunch?
It won’t be easy…
But experiments like this will give you a better idea about how quality affects prices.
You’ll see that there is always a give and take. Strengths and weaknesses to all stones.
What escalates the price the most?
Many believe carat weight, hands down. But others will lean towards clarity. Some cut. How would you rate them? From A-F, see if you can pick the most expensive to the cheapest.
Let’s go…
Not easy is it?
I mean, it’s really not even fair. But that’s exactly what you get when you shop and compare diamonds… especially engagement rings. There are thousands of different sizes and quality. It’s mind boggling. So trying to find two exact stones to match is almost impossible.
What you have to do is narrow down your search.
Narrow down the quality you’re searching for, what color you want, what clarity (or pick a range), that way it will be easier to compare apples to apples. Otherwise you’ll get a thousand diamonds and have no clue which diamond to choose.
So which diamond was the most expensive?
Take a peek…
It’s D
Were you close?
It was one of the smallest diamonds… Can you believe that?
Listing in order from expensive to cheap:
CARAT, CLARITY, COLOR, CUT, POL, SYM, FLUOR | PRICE | VIEW |
.70, FL, D, EX, EX, EX, NONE | $5,400 | VIEW |
1.71, SI2, M, EX, EX, EX, FAINT | $4,640 | VIEW |
1.29, SI1, M, EX, EX, EX, STRONG | $3,760 | VIEW |
.86, I1, H, VG, VG, G, MEDIUM | $2,410 | VIEW |
.63, VVS2, D, EX, EX, EX, FAINT | $2,390 | VIEW |
1.00, SI2, K, EX, EX, EX, STRONG | $2,330 | VIEW |
(Prices good at the time of this post.)
So in this example, you’ll see that clarity and color (the best of both fields) won out over carat weight. It’s also important to note that the most expensive diamond had zero fluorescence (which is a good thing). And all the other diamonds had some.
So unless you want to drive all over town, trying to write down every diamond, every quality, every characteristic, you should first narrow down you search. Choose a price range. A budget. Choose a decent quality (like these SI1, F+, .75 Carat diamonds here). That way you’ll see which jeweler is giving you the better deal, and the better diamond.
There are thousands of different diamond combinations to choose from, what’s your favorite?
