Believe it or not, but this is one of the easiest (and grossest) ways to determine if pearls are real or not!

Rub the pearl on your teeth!

I’ve seen many jewelers do this (especially if a customer is selling a pearl strand, and they want to verify if the pearls are fake or genuine).

They rub the pearl across their front teeth (hopefully the pearls have been cleaned). I know it sounds crazy, but it’s a great indicator in identification.

This is what you do:

You pick the pearl up, and gently rub it up and down and across your front upper teeth (because they’re the most sensitive). If the pearl feels smooth and slippery, the pearl in question is probably fake.

Fake pearls tend to feel like plastic or glassy, perfectly smooth.

Real pearls on the other hand, are organic and porous, and their nacre will feel more rough, sandy and gritty.

You’ll actually be able to feel the vibrations and roughness on your incisors. It’s cool and it works.

Try it, you’ll see!
