The #1 diamond engagement ring is the solitaire.
Hands down!
A solitaire is a plain slim band that holds a single diamond.
Whether it be in white gold, yellow gold or rose gold, this style of ring shows off a diamond better than any other mounting.
It sticks a diamond up, raises it high, and says “look at me!”
The problem is…
If that diamond is not a large diamond, it can actually make an engagement ring look small (and some may say cheap).
This is because the average diamond sold for an engagement ring is just 1/3 carat. Smaller than that looks really tiny (like 10-20 points). And even going up to a half carat can still look insignificant.
Only when you get into a decent size, like 3/4 carat and up, does the stone actually stand out and look balanced on the mounting and her finger.
Like these one carat diamond solitaires below…
One carat is the “dream” carat weight, but of course, not everyone can afford such a huge stone (diamonds running between $2,700 – $8,000+ on James Allen)…
So what can you do?
What can be done to make a single stone engagement ring look larger?
1) Set the diamond into a halo mounting
Putting a ring of diamonds around the center stone (which is putting the stone into a different style of mounting), makes the whole diamond ring look bigger. Like these two different versions shown below, one with pave-set diamonds, and the other with a bezel of beautiful diamonds…
Bigger and Bolder
Halo mountings start around $540 and up, depending on the carat weight and style of the ring.
2) Go for a longer diamond
If you change shape and go for a fancy cut diamond, like the marquise, emerald cut, radiant, princess cut, oval… The diamond will look bigger on her finger.
All these fancy cuts tends to look bigger because of their elongated shapes.
3) Break the carat weight up
If you break up the weight of the entire ring (not buying one stone, but buying multiple stones), then the ring will appear larger, and most of the time be cheaper too!
Or, you can always wait until you get a wedding band as well. Bands add width and bling to a ring.
Bands, enhancers, jackets, inserts…
These types of wedding bands will all make a single diamond engagement ring look bigger (But that doesn’t get added until the wedding)!
So there you go…
3 easy ways to turn a smaller stone (and a smaller budget) into a magnificent masterpiece.
Cheers! :)
