Terrifying Jewelry Store Robberies

“Everybody on the ground, NOW!”

Working in a jewelry store has a lot of perks, I love it.

But working with small, highly valuable diamonds and gemstones also puts you at risk.

For a lot of robberies happen at jewelers across the country.

I’ve been though a bunch of robberies in the last 27 years… And one of them was really scary; masks, sledge hammers, screaming, a baby… Read the entire incident here: The day our jewelry store got robbed!

After all, diamonds, rings, bracelets, pendants, and earrings (not to mention Rolex watches) are easy items to sell and pawn.

It makes them very targetable

You never know when you could get robbed. Some robberies are quiet, sneaky, behind your back. Others happen in the middle of the night.

But most are during the day, during operation hours. This is because insurance makes stores lock up all their diamonds and gold in a vault overnight.

So even during midday, when the store is packed and busy, a robbery could take place.

Even when you’re there!

Scary!

If you see a bunch of people coming in with masks and guns, do exactly as they say.

Don’t try to be the hero!

Give them what they want; jewelry, cash, wallets, credit cards

It’s just not worth it!

This is why jewelry stores have locked cases, unbreakable glass, alarms all over the store, and high-def cameras in every corner…

They have to!

Because you never know when things like this will happen…

Take a peek at some real robberies in progress

Truly frightening!

You never know when you’ll be next.

It could happen at the bank, 7-11, gas station, or your friendly neighborhood jewelry store.

“I only came in for a battery!”

Sigh!

We just hope that everybody is okay

For you don’t know when things will go array

An I1 clarity diamond just isn’t worth it!

Wouldn’t you say?

  1. So glad to know you’ve never been hurt in any of these misadventures!
I can’t imagine what it would be like to be on that side of the counter during one of those episodes, but I’ve come close.
I spent some time helping out my next door neighbor who took over management of a local convenience store and needed to “clean house” of some incompetent and allegedly dishonest employees. Nothing ever really proven there, even with cameras and such, but there was more than enough suspicion to let her go. Anyway, she needed someone else in a hurry, and I was between jobs, recuperating from back surgery (2nd one in 5 years) and was looking for something to do a few hours a day. I had never worked that sort of retail before. But I had worked general merchandise, and fast food when I was in college, so it wasn’t so foreign. I told her I would only work days, no nights, as it just seemed safer, busier with more staff and customers around and managers always on site. My biggest concern was drive offs, as they hadn’t yet made every pump a prepay only, and I had a couple, but so did everyone else. All are that way now of course, as this was in early 2000. I used to of course keep an eye on everyone who came in, as I could, just to let them know they had been seen. No real issues of a robbery nature on my shifts.
But whem my son and his friend from high school took jobs working the night shift at a brand new store of another locally owned chain of convenience stores after they graduated from high school, it was straight night shift, no managers present, about 15 miles from home, and right next to I70! That’s the major east-west Interstate across most of the country. It’s just ridiculously busy! Anyway, it was built in a brand new facility, not a truck stop but right across the side street from one. The only thing at all that gave me any comfort at all was that they put a County Sheriff’s deputies substation right at the end of the same building, so they were in and out all night, and the store too, along with the local State Police Officers who came in frequently for coffee and to use the restrooms, which were of course also brand new and kept spotless by the night shift! So, I had something to count on as far as his safety was concerned. Of course, they are trained from the get-go to be cooperative and give up any money they ask for that hasn’t been dropped in the safe, which was supposed to be less than $50 at all times! I actually ended up working there for a short period also, but almost all day shifts – very few nights, and only when they needed someone to cover my son’s shift! It was somewhat nerve-racking at 3 in the morning, or when there wasn’t another soul around! My son did get robbed two or three times before he said enough! He worked several years as the Receiving Department Manager for a large Barnes and Noble store on the (big bucks) North side of Indianapolis, and is now managing the “Spirit Store” at Butler University! Not much chance of getting robbed there I hope!?
Again, glad you’re fine, and have suffered no damage that can be called “long term”! My son’s take on situations like that has always been along the lines of “It’s not MY MONEY and that’s what the store has insurance for!!” So, I just hope they never have to file any claims!!
