That's A VS Diamond?

VS Clarity Diamonds (VS1 and VS2 – Which Stands for Level 1 and Level 2) means “Very Slightly Included“.

They are Extremely Nice Quality Diamonds, Very Clean, Very Rare, and also Expensive!

True Definition

The True Definition of VS Clarity, taken from some of the Biggest Names in the Industry is as follows:

GIA

(Obtained From the Diamond Dictionary)

“…Diamonds containing Minor Inclusions and Blemishes that can be seen under 10x Magnification, but which are Not Visible to the Unaided Eye…”

GIA

(Diamond Essentials)

“VS Diamonds contain Small or Minor Inclusions Observed with Effort under 10x Magnification. VS Diamonds typically have Small Included Crystals, Small Clouds, or Small Feathers.”

GIA

(Obtained From Diamonds and Diamond Grading)

“VS Stones contain Minor Inclusions that range from Difficult (VS1) to somewhat Easy (VS2) for a Trained Grader to see under 10x Magnification. Typical Inclusions are Small Included Crystals or Feathers, Distinct Clouds, and Groups of Pin Points. They don’t Affect the Stone’s Beauty.

In Very Rare Cases, a VS Stone might actually contain an Eye Visible Inclusion, you have to Consider the Size, Nature, Position, Number and Color or Relief of the Inclusion in Relation to the Size and Shape of the Stone…”

DCA

(Obtained From The Diamond Course)

“Minor Inclusions that are Fairly Difficult (VS1) or Fairly Easy (VS2) to see under 10x”

Renee Newman

(Obtained From the Diamond Handbook)

“Minor Inclusions ranging from Difficult to somewhat Easy to see, for Trained Graders using 10 Power Magnification and Proper Lighting.”

Fred Cuellar

(Obtained From How to Buy a Diamond)

“Has Inclusions of Blemishes Smaller than a Grain of Salt when viewed under 10x Magnification. No Carbon, Fractures, or Breaks. High Quality.”

Antoinette Matlins

(Obtained From Diamonds)

“VS1 and VS2 are Grades given to Stones with Very Small Inclusions, Difficult for a Qualified Observer to see. These Stones are more Readily Available in Good Color and Cut, and their Flaws will Not be Visible Except under Magnification. These are Excellent Stones to Purchase.”

All these Definitions are Accurate and Just!

VS Clarity is a Beautiful Clarity to Own. I LOVE them, and that’s the Exact Clarity I would Buy! (I have a .50 Carat VS1, D, GIA Certified, Excellent Cut Diamond in my Ear right now).

And when I think about VS Diamonds, this is what I Picture:

That’s Incredible!

Just a Couple of Small Pin Points and Marks as Visible on this Diamond Plot:

It truly is a Spectacular Sight!

And then…

Then you’ll also find VS Diamonds that aren’t so Grand

In fact, some VS Diamonds will make you wonder “That’s Not VS Clarity!” (Look for Lines, Marks, Inclusions and Black Spots)

See, they make you Question all that you Think and Know about VS Clarity!

So Why the Big Difference?

VS Diamonds will always look Different because every Stone is Unique in Nature. No Two are Ever Alike!

Each Stone is Graded Independently and Clarity and Grading is always Subjective.

Plus, many other Factors can contribute to the overall “Look” of the Stone:

  • Lighting (Different Lighting Atmospheres will Change how Inclusions show up)
  • Magnification (Power Used, and WHERE the Lens is Focused – Top, Middle or Bottom of the Stone)
  • Cut (Cut Plays a Huge Factor in the Beauty and Sparkle and Shine of a Diamond, all things that can Help Mask and Hide Flaws)
  • Carat Weight (Bigger Diamonds have Easier to Spot Flaws)
  • Color (A Whiter Diamond tends to Show Inclusions Easier, they stand out due to the Contrast in the Stone)
  • Fluorescence (If a Diamond is Fluorescent it can make the Diamond appear Foggy or Hazy, and make the Inclusions harder to see. The whole Stone could look Cloudy or Blurry)
  • Mounting (The Mounting itself can Hide, Cover up, or Mask Flaws)

So many things can Alter or Change a Diamond’s Appearance, and one other Characteristic applies…

The Range!

Diamonds are Graded on a Range. So Depending on where the Diamond falls in that Range, it could make it Appear Better or Worse!

One VS2 Diamond could fall towards the Bottom of the Range, Closer to an SI1 Clarity, while another VS2 Diamond could be at the High End, Closer to a VS1.

Take a Peek at a VS Diamond Range…

So you see, all VS Diamonds can Look Different. That’s why it’s Important to View Many of them before you Decide on the Exact Stone to Buy.

Plus, WHO Certifies the Diamond can Affect the Clarity as well. Some Diamond Graders (Like EGL and IGI) are Not as Accurate or Strict as GIA when it comes to Grading Diamonds. So Comparing those VS Stones to a GIA VS Diamond could be a Day and Night Difference!

To really Compare Diamonds, Compare Same Quality AND Same Certificates!

That’s the only way to truly find the Perfect Diamond at the Best Deal Possible!

My Recommendation:

Buy your Diamonds from James Allen, Buy Pure White Diamonds, VS1 or VS2, with Excellent Cuts, and GIA Certified!
