Looking for a 1/2 carat?
Half carat diamonds are .50 carats (50 points) each, and are a pretty common carat weight for an engagement ring.
So what is the cheapest half carat diamond right now?
Looking online at James Allen (one of the biggest and best diamond retailers in the world), they have a half carat cushion cut diamond selling for just $410.
THAT’S CHEAP!
Take a peek:
CARAT, CLARITY, COLOR, POL, SYM, FLUOR | PRICE | VIEW |
.50, SI2, K, VG, VG, FAINT | $410 | VIEW |
Hard to believe it’s that cheap…
But it’s this cheap for a reason:
- It has K Color
- It’s a Cushion Cut
- It has SI2 Clarity
- It has Faint Fluorescence
That’s why it’s so cheap (plus, cushion cuts are generally the cheapest cut of diamond you can buy).
This diamond has a faint yellow cast, the polish and symmetry are not the best (graded very good), and it does have faint fluorescence (which may make it look foggy or hazy in natural sunlight).
So the cheapest, isn’t always the best.
You get what you pay for.
Normally, when people are searching for the cheapest, they’re shopping for the a good looking diamond that’s cheap (something entirely different).
So adjusting my options for more average quality diamonds (SI1+, G+), I get better quality diamonds (more sparkle and life), like this half carat diamond below:
CARAT, CLARITY, COLOR, POL, SYM, FLUOR | PRICE | VIEW |
.50, VS2, G, EX, EX, NONE | $670 | VIEW |
That diamond is much better.
It’s not only a much cleaner diamond (VS2 clarity), but the color is G (fine white). It has excellent polish, excellent symmetry, and zero fluorescence. And at $670 (at the time of this post), it’s still a huge deal.
But what about rounds?
The round brilliant cut diamond is the most popular cut of diamond there is. It’s also the most expensive (because it’s the most in demand). So when you plug in the same criteria (good looking, average quality) into the search results, this is what you get:
CARAT, CLARITY, COLOR, CUT, POL, SYM, FLUOR | PRICE | VIEW |
.50, SI1, E, EX, EX, EX, NONE | $4,360 | VIEW |
Now that’s a beautiful diamond.
Round brilliant cut diamonds have one thing that all the other cuts of diamond (called fancies) don’t have:
A Cut Grade.
Meaning, only round diamonds will get a GIA cut grade (excellent is the best), and this diamond has the best. Not only does it have an excellent cut, but it also has excellent grades in both polish and symmetry as well.
It costs more, sure, but for the sparkle and brilliance and fire, it’s well worth the added price.
It’s a great looking half carat diamond that’s still affordable (it’s the same price as a much lower quality half carat found in the mall jewelry stores).
Grab this great half carat diamond here.
Or if that’s sold…

But cheap and good, is what you’re really looking for.
