What are Potato Pearls?
Potato Pearls are Simply Fresh Water Pearls (Grown in Fresh Water versus Salt Water) that Form in a Classic Round Potato Shape.
As seen here:
Usually Fresh Water Pearls grow in 3 Primary Shapes:
- Spherical
- Symmetrical
- Baroque (Which are Tear Dropped or Pear Shaped)
But Potato Pearls don’t really fit into any of these Categories well, so they were given the Fancy Name “Potato” to Distinguish them.

The Best Thing about Fresh Water Pearls is the Fact that they are:
Very Affordable!
Usually just 1/5th the Price of Regular Cultured Pearls (Huge Savings). And some Potato Pearls will actually Resemble Akoya Pearls (Finest Pearls on the Market). They tend to have Great Orient (Rainbow Color Effects on the Surface of the Stone), Great Luster (Reflections), they are Relatively Free of Blemishes (Surface Mars), and the Shapes are Pretty Consistent; Slightly out of Round!
Colors will Vary
Potato Pearls can come in a Wide Variety of Body Tones and Colors as well. And Interesting enough, the Color of the Pearl is due to What the Mollusk Eats, it’s Genetic Makeup, and its Surrounding Environment.
Common Colors are:
Bronze, Orange, Gray, Brown, Yellow, Green, Black, Gold, Fuchsia, White, Purple, Olive, Peach and Rose.
The Most Common Pearl Colors are: White, Lavender, Peach and Black!
Potato Pearls, as well as all Fresh Water Pearls (Like Rice Pearls), have been Gaining in Popularity for the past 20 years.
And because of Price, they make Wonderful Gifts and are Perfect for any Occasion (Even a Wedding). See some Beautiful Designs Here:
Potato Pearl Sizes
