Watches make a wonderful gift for pretty much any occasion: Mother’s Day, birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, New Years, wedding gifts, graduation, retirement…
You name it.
Not to mention award watches, career or sport watches and memorial watches.
They are ideal gifts for just about anyone and everyone.
And people like to make the most of these special occasions by personalizing the watches. Engraving a name, date, initials, quote, or phrase on the back cover of the watch.
What can be engraved?
That’s the real question!
Every watch is different, and there is no way to pick and choose what watch lines or brands work the best. You just have to look at them and view the back. Some watches can’t be engraved on, while others can. Some you could fit an entire poem on the cover, and some you might be able to only fit one line or word. You just never know.
It all depends on the size of the available space. You have to engrave around any stamp marks, manufacturers logos or info that the watch company sees fit to plant all over the watch.
You also have to look at the type of metal the cover is made of (stainless steel is the best). Some watches are very cheap and the metal is a base-metal that is very thin or plated. It could bend or break if not done right.

So let’s look at some watch back covers that can be engraved…
You see, the size of the watch back matters, and what’s already imprinted makes a big difference of what can be engraved and what can’t.
Most of the time the cover has to come off the watch, so the watch doesn’t get scratched or ruined in the vise grips.
The cover then gets held down in an engraving machine… (this is quite difficult if the back is beveled or curved.
The type or lettering has to be the right size and spacing to fit. So it also depends on what the jeweler has on hand.
Tricky tricky…
Sometimes engraving can be tricky and difficult since you need to apply just enough pressure to engrave deep enough (so it lasts), but you can’t apply too much pressure because you don’t want to dent, bend or warp the back. If the back bends or curves, it may not ever fit back on the watch, or at the very least, it won’t be waterproof or water resistant anymore.
The back needs to remain perfectly flat so it can snap back on and seal the watch correctly.
An experienced jeweler can take a quick look at your watch and let you know your options.
Here’s some examples of watches that can’t be engraved:
You see how there is little to no space available? It all has to work. And that’s not an easy task sometimes. You have to look at a good number of watches to decide, and often, especially when it comes to buying watches online, you never get to see what the back of the watch looks like. Not cool.
Engraving is generally a free service that jeweler’s will do if you buy the watch from them (or at the least, a small minimal fee).
Common things to engrave on watches are anniversary dates, names, initials, short phrases, medical alert, or silly sayings. Like so…

What ever you engrave, make it special and memorable.
Word of advice:
If you get a watch engraved, you can’t return the watch if they happen not to like it.
Personalized items are non-refundable.
They are yours to keep.
So if you engrave it, make sure it’s appropriate, make sure they like it, and make sure it fits.
Nothing sucks more than being stuck with a watch that reads “Annabelle Forever” (except for a tattoo that says “Annabelle Forever”), especially when you broke up last week.
Think before you engrave.
The only good thing, it still keeps time.
That’s the most important thing, right? ;)
Awesome watches:
One of the coolest engraved watches that I found, was this very cool Fireman’s Watch, with the ‘For My Firefighter Poem‘ Engraved on the back that says: “Remember, I’m with you every step of the way, you’re here in my heart each and every day“.
I love this Watch!
(price has gone up since the time of this post)
It’s so beautiful to look at!
Plus, you could also find watches for USMC, FORD, SPORTS (like Florida Gators, Ohio State Buckeyes, Green Bay Packers, Michigan Wolverines, and the Chicago Blackhawks).. along with other watches like: College Sports, Star Trek, Military, and the “We Will Never Forget” Commemorative Watch. Very cool stuff.
Make sure to check them all out here!
And have fun getting your watch engraved.
Cheers! :)
