What is a Herkimer diamond?
It sounds like a particular trade name, like Hearts on Fire, True Hearts, Tolkowsky, Centillion…
It could also be a cut; Asscher cut, King cut, Radiant, Ideal…
So what gives? What is a Herkimer?
Well, for starters, it’s NOT a diamond!
Not even close.
It’s a diamond look-alike that gets its name for a couple of different reasons.
A Herkimer is a quartz crystal, that is natural (and first discovered in Herkimer county, New York), and grows with a hexagonal structure with facets on both ends (similar to a diamond). It also polishes up like a real diamond as well. But quartz is a softer stone, crystal is a 7 on the moh’s scale of hardness, where diamond is a 10. Herkimer’s can also be filled with inclusions like a diamond, or any gemstone. But often these flaws are liquid bubble-like.
Many people associate Herkimer crystals with Chakra (because of their transparent appearance). They use them for channeling, energy, psychic visions, clairvoyance, telepathy. Chakra’s balance your mind, body, and soul. And white crystals like these, are perfect for the seventh Chakra, the crown (which utilizes all of the senses). They can also be used for the Major Chakra, which helps activate all the other gemstones (read more about Chakra here). Fascinating and powerful.
So grab a Herkimer, loose or mounted, and wear a healing stone today.
