I’ve seen it for years, mainly in the pierced jewelry departments; belly button rings, nose piercings, tongue rings, earrings…

But lately, I’ve been seeing more spread throughout the other areas of jewelry, like chains, rings, bracelets and even pendants.

And while I love the futuristic concept of this, since it’s certainly eye-catching, I’m still torn with whether I would ever buy more (I do own one ring).

What is it, and how do they make it?

Anodized plated jewelry refers to jewelry pieces that have undergone a process called anodization, which creates a colored oxide layer on the surface of the metal. This process is commonly used on metals such as titanium, aluminum, and niobium to achieve vibrant and durable colors.

Here is how it’s made…

1. Material Selection: The jewelry is typically made from a base metal, such as titanium or aluminum, which has good corrosion resistance properties.
2. Cleaning: The metal piece is thoroughly cleaned to remove any dirt, grease, or impurities from the surface. This ensures proper adhesion of the anodized layer.
3. Anodization Process: The cleaned metal piece is immersed in an electrolyte solution, which acts as a conductor. The metal piece serves as the anode (positive electrode) in an electrical circuit.
4. Electrical Current Application: A direct current (DC) is applied to the metal piece, causing oxygen ions from the electrolyte solution to bond with the metal surface.
5. Oxide Layer Formation: As the electrical current flows through the metal, an oxide layer begins to grow on the surface. The thickness of this oxide layer determines the color achieved during anodization.
6. Dyeing (optional): If desired, the anodized jewelry piece can be further enhanced with dyeing. This involves immersing the piece in a dye bath, allowing the dye molecules to penetrate the porous oxide layer and colorize it.
7. Sealing: Once the desired color is achieved, the anodized piece is rinsed and then sealed. Sealing helps to enhance the durability of the oxide layer, making it resistant to wear, fading, and corrosion.
8. Finishing Touches: Finally, the jewelry piece is polished and any additional decorative elements, such as gemstones or engravings, may be added.

It’s important to note that the specific details of the anodization process can vary depending on the metal being used and the desired outcome. Different metals may require different electrolyte solutions and electrical parameters to achieve optimal results. Additionally, advanced techniques like laser anodization or multiple color layers can be employed to create intricate and unique designs.

Do you love it, or hate it?

Or, like me, remain impartial. Some pieces are cool, like the multi-color ring I own, but that’s probably where I draw the line. I do like the look of the link chains, but it really isn’t for me. Maybe if I had other piercings…
