WHY ARENT HEART SHAPED DIAMONDS MORE POPULAR

When it comes to diamond shapes, the timeless classics like round brilliant and princess cut reign supreme.

However, there is one shape that exudes romanticism and sentimentality like no other—the heart-shaped diamond.

Despite its symbolic appeal and undeniable charm, heart-shaped diamonds have remained somewhat less popular compared to their counterparts.

So let’s delve into the fascinating history, characteristics, and trivia surrounding heart-shaped diamonds to unveil the mystery behind their limited popularity.

Origins and Historical Significance:

The heart-shaped diamond traces its origins back to the late 15th century, during the reign of King Maximilian I of Austria. Known for his deep affection for his wife, Mary of Burgundy, Maximilian commissioned the creation of a diamond cut resembling the universal symbol of love—the heart. Since then, heart-shaped diamonds have become synonymous with love, passion, and romance.

Characteristics and Cutting Process:

Heart-shaped diamonds possess a distinctive shape that requires intricate craftsmanship and precision. These diamonds are essentially pear-shaped with a cleft at the top, forming two symmetrical lobes that resemble a heart. The beauty and symmetry of a heart-shaped diamond depend on the quality of its cut.

To create a well-proportioned heart-shaped diamond, highly skilled artisans employ expert techniques. The cutter must strike a balance between the length and width of the diamond to ensure a graceful outline without compromising the stone’s brilliance. Achieving perfect symmetry is crucial, as even a slight imbalance can detract from the diamond’s overall appeal.

Symbolic Significance:

Heart-shaped diamonds hold immense symbolic significance, making them a popular choice for romantic occasions such as engagements, anniversaries, and Valentine’s Day (especially gemstone rings, like these heart shaped rings found on Amazon). The shape itself evokes feelings of love, passion, and devotion, making heart-shaped diamonds an ideal expression of commitment and affection.

Factors Affecting Popularity:

Despite the captivating symbolism and romantic appeal, several factors contribute to the relative rarity of heart-shaped diamonds in the market:

1. Complexity of Cutting:

Crafting a heart-shaped diamond requires exceptional skill and expertise. The intricate cutting process often leads to higher costs, as more rough diamond material is wasted during the shaping process.

2. Limited Availability:

Heart-shaped diamonds are relatively scarce compared to other popular shapes. The demand for heart-shaped diamonds is not as consistent, leading to fewer manufacturers specializing in this shape. Consequently, the limited supply affects their availability and pricing.

3. Preference for Classic Shapes:

Traditional diamond shapes like round brilliant and princess cut have long dominated the market due to their versatility and timeless appeal. These shapes are often the default choice for consumers seeking a classic, elegant look.

Interesting Trivia:

  1. The largest heart-shaped diamond in the world is the “Heart of Eternity.” Weighing 27.64 carats, this rare blue diamond is known for its intense color and exceptional clarity.
  2. Heart-shaped diamonds first gained popularity during the Victorian Era, as they were often used in sentimental jewelry pieces and love tokens.
  3. Celebrities like Lady Gaga, Nicki Minaj, and Gwen Stefani have chosen heart-shaped diamonds to symbolize their love and individuality.

So you see, heart-shaped diamonds may not be as prevalent as their round or princess-cut counterparts, their enigmatic allure and timeless symbolism continue to captivate romantics around the world. The rarity, intricate cutting process, and preference for classic shapes contribute to their limited popularity. However, for those seeking a unique and sentimental diamond shape that embodies love and romance, heart-shaped diamonds offer a distinctive and cherished choice.

  1. I think they are gorgeous – as long as they are well cut and proportioned of course – and I have always been surprised that they don’t show up in engagement rings more often! I mean really – what else besides the ❤ heart shape would engender more romanticism than the heart?

I’ve seen them much more frequently in necklaces/pendants, and even earrings, which require TWO at least, in colored gemstones than I ever have in diamonds. Of course, there’s always CZ, and moissanite, for clear, sparkly stones.

But my grandfather who cut diamonds and other precious and semi-precious stones in his private lab, explained how much more skill and experience it takes to do them justice, and to do them properly. Which, as you said, affects the cost per carat price more so than most other shapes. Those with the desire, and the wherewithal to acquire them are not the majority of people, or even a significant minority, which also affects their presence and availability in the market.

I almost ended up with a lovely heart shaped diamond engagement ring myself, but it happened when I was too young (17) to be able to make such a life altering decision, and I knew it. (Even at 17, I was smart enough to know what I didn’t know!)

The gentleman in question was 5 years older than me, in the Army, kind, sweet, loving, and adorable. He was stationed at a large Army Post nearby, but was due to be honorably discharged from active duty within a year or so. I didn’t mind that so much, but it was the alternatives I did mind a lot. His family business was certainly honorable, and made a decent, comfortable income. But, the location, and his insistence on his returning there, without discussion, was what I found troubling.

Let’s just say he never, ever made any obvious indications of adopting the troubling history and culture of the Southern State from which he hailed, but it was precisely that history that was so troubling.

I grew up in probably the most northern of the Southern States, and in a very heavily saturated area of all the military branches there are. Meaning a large proportion of the population, including many of my elementary and high school classmates, and their families, were NOT from there, but just “passing through” from other areas. I did not adopt the local culture nearly as much as the more pleasant aspects of others. The idea of being buried forever in the deep South, no matter who it was with, was just not something I could stomach. And honestly, raising children in that environment was also not something I could justify.

And after watching the lengthy history of that area in the meantime, makes me more and more sure I made the right decision in the long run! ❤ Heart shaped diamond or not!

The man I ended up with is DEFINITELY the right decision for me! And we will be celebrating our 47th Anniversary tomorrow, and we’re still as much in love as ever, just the more mature version! Sounds like we made a good decision from here! I might even score a pretty heart shaped something for an Anniversary gift?!

    Have a great weekend!

    • I really like the heart shaped diamond as well. But it’s not easy to find one that has a really pleasing shape. Many of them are too fat, too chunky, too small of a table, too deep, or don’t have a distinct enough heart shape to them. But when you find that perfect stone, it’s sheer beauty. Thanks for the wonderful story. :) -Richard

      • Absolutely right, of course. I agree that many seen in the “chain stores” are mostly not worth the money, exactly for those reasons – too fat, too skinny, too small of a table, too chunky, just don’t bring out the heart shape enough for those and other reasons. This proves your original statement about how much skill and experience one must have to be able to do them justice! Otherwise, the stone is just wasted!

I think that inexpensive CZs should be “training rough” for someone just learning to cut various shapes of gemstones. For all I know, it’s already being done that way! But it sure would save the real deal, from the mined rough, from being used up in practicing! Some of the ones I have seen over the years were surely “practice” stones!

        Have a great weekend!

PS – I got my “Anniversary present” yesterday.

We spent $300 on all the pieces needed to replace basically the entire A/C system on my car!‍♀️ It needs it now, and was put on the back burner so to speak a couple of years ago when we had to have most of the well system replaced for our house! Can’t go without the water! We have a total of three vehicles to use whenever we go someplace, but it’s difficult to get the defrosting system to work properly when the A/C doesn’t work! That’s important in the winter too!

So, last night, we ordered all the parts in one big kit, has everything except the refrigerant, which we always get locally, from a parts house with whom we are practically on a first name basis! And the labor is no problem, since 47 years ago today – at 6:30 PM Eastern Daylight Savings Time, on a Wednesday evening then, I was smart enough to marry a “multifaceted”, multitalented mechanic! (Don’cha just love the way I worked that word, “multifaceted” into the conversation!?)

        • Happy Anniversary! :) I have a feeling that heart shaped diamonds are more irregular than one would think, not because of the skill of the cutter, but actually the size and shape of the rough rock they are left to cut a heart from. I feel like hearts are the last diamond to cut, if there’s room, and if the parent rock is thick, or too thin, that’s going to also dictate the shape of the heart. Sad, but it all comes to maximizing the cost of the rock. Everything else, including cut and beauty, gets sacrificed. -Richard

  2. Yes, that is sad, isn’t it? But think how the value of a really beautifully done, artistically focused heart shaped stone would sky rocket on the open market! It might even make it worth the sacrifice of some of the rough to get a really % gorgeous heart shaped stone out of it.

By the way, do you want to see a REALLY “WOW!!!” ❤ stone? I’m thinking it’s really too much to be a beautiful ring, but it sure would make a killer pendant!
