  1. OMG! Are you serious? Who would do that? Do they think you have rings waiting in a drawer, already made, ready for them to just come in and pick up? Or you have a Santa’s workshop full of jewelry elves tinkering away in some back room, drinking egg nog and waiting for THEM to come in and place that order, so they’ll have something to do? Criminellies! Was there one whole brain present amongst the lot of them?
I and my favorite jewelry store “guru” here locally, got together the first part of APRIL one year and began the design process on a specially made Father’s Ring for my father-in-law, to be able to have it done in time for June’s holiday. (She manages the only jewelry store in town, and is the granddaughter of the founder, who opened the store in the early 1950’s.)
And that wasn’t even the beginning of it ~ my husband has four siblings living in three different states that had to be brought in to the conversation before I could get that far! We had to set a budget, and I had to start collecting the money, before I even set foot in the store. And if you think THAT was simple, you’ve never tried herding cats, because that’s what it was like with a couple of them!
Anyway, what we wanted in terms of materials wasn’t expensive, because my FIL only wears Sterling silver. He doesn’t wear a wedding ring, but wears other pieces in sterling, and I have picked up on his conversations that be prefers it because of the patina it can get after being worn a while. Not tarnish, mind you, but the soft patina. Anyway, there is (or was, at the time) no such animal as a Sterling silver father’s ring, so we had to create one. Finding the right base mounting for it took time, and then we had to design the arrangement and placement of the stones, which my “guru” and I worked out together. It was quite a process, and then it had to actually be produced. Fortunately, the store has an in-house Goldsmith who also works in silver, so nothing ever left the store, once the mounting and stones were ordered and assembled. It took a few weeks to get it done after we had the design decisions made, because it had to be put in its turn in the lineup of waiting work.
It was, to put it mildly, a rousing success, and I know I saw tears in his eyes when he opened the package. Unfortunately, it was a little tight, since the size his wife gave me was off a ring he wore on his other hand, and I had to practically arm wrestle the man to get it back long enough to have it sized up a bit – which the store did for no charge, bless their little 24kt hearts! He had to wear it long enough to show it off to everyone first, before he would part with it!! But, we got it sized up and back on his hand, and he loves it. I never see him without it! It sure made ME top points as a daughter-in-law!! Because I am the “jewelry guru” in that family!
But weeks?? No, MONTHS! Of course this was a custom design piece from the get-go, not a “fill out the form – pick one from column A and one from column B” etc., etc., type affair.
Silly people!! You’re right about the spiked egg nog though – they must have really spiked up the batch they drank before making that decision!
I’ve even seen many stores post “Advent Calendar” type signs in their stores, counting down the number of days until there’s no more time to place special orders for Christmas, and some for other special holidays as well. Sometimes those help, but then there are the folks who can’t or won’t read them, take them seriously, or pay any attention to the fact that the rules ALSO apply to them! You can’t special order ANYTHING in two days anywhere, any time of the year! Those folks need to start working on that plan around Valentine’s Day if they want it in time for Mothers Day! Golly!
    Happy New Year!!

    • Awesome! Did you get pics of the Father’s Ring? That would be cool to show off. :) Happy New Year Shari!

      • Ya know, I didn’t even think to do that! But that doesn’t mean it still can’t be done. He’s had it long enough that it should be time to have it polished up again, have the initial re-antiqued, and check on those stones to make sure they are all secure still, before this coming Father’s Day! Hmmmmm…..time to get that arranged! Then, when it’s all shiny and renewed, I’ll get photos. Good idea!
As you can see, I like to plan ahead! And it may take a bit before I can wrestle it away from him long enough to get it done. They live about 125 miles away, and it’d be a good excuse for a visit.
        Happy New Year!
