Flawless Diamond With A Little Black Spot

Well…

Now I’ve heard it all.

I had a customer come into the store the other day, looking to trade-in her diamond towards a much bigger one…

No Problem!

Until…

She tells me that her diamond is Flawless, saying “My diamond is Flawless with just one visible black spot in the center…”

Oh Boy…

(Customers always think their stones are flawless, or extremely high quality–when they’re not! This is actually nothing new.)

You see, Flawless and “a visible black spot” are oxymorons, totally opposite sides of the spectrum.

A Flawless diamond can’t have eye-visible inclusions. And if the diamond does have things that you can see with the eye (no microscope or 10x jeweler’s loupe needed), then it’s not Flawless. It’s Included!

I Clarity means “Included“. You can see inclusions with the bare eye. That’s the nature of this clarity.

If it was Flawless, you wouldn’t see anything inside the stone, not even under 10x magnification (what they grade diamonds with). Flawless means there are virtually zero imperfections inside or outside of the diamond.

Flawless is Perfect

Flawless diamonds are the best clarities (Flawless; FL, and Internally Flawless; IF) that you can buy. Which also makes them quite rare and very expensive.

Compare a Flawless diamond below, to an Included diamond.

Do they look the same to you?

Not in the least! (And look at the difference in prices.)

More than likely the salesperson told the customer that spiel to make them think they’re getting something way better than they were. “It’s top-notch!” Yeah, right. “At a fraction of the price!” When in fact, they sold this customer a bottom of the bucket diamond; the worst clarity on Earth!

OUCH!

So if you’re buying “Flawless“, make sure you purchase GIA certified diamonds only, like these shown below…

Flawless Diamonds

And if you’re buying “Included” diamonds, with eye-visible flaws, then stick with I1 clarity diamonds like these:

Included I Clarity Diamonds

That way you won’t get ripped off, and won’t be fooled into thinking your diamond is the cream of the crop.

It may be a nice stone, but if they pulled the veil over your eyes, and you paid way too much, then shame on them… And you for not doing your homework first! It’s a hard lesson to learn, for sure.

SO BUY GIA CERTIFIED STONES ONLY!

Because Flawless is Flawless, and eye-visible is I clarity (and SI2 in some cases–from a side view).

Cheers! :)
