Are Everyday Wrist Watches Becoming Extinct

It’s a weird thing to say… Watches becoming extinct.

But it’s true, watches are more obsolete then you think.

Just like the pocket watch, the common, everyday wrist watch, like the Seiko, Bulova, Citizen, are on their way out.

Sales are way down, and have been gradually declining in the last years. I can remember selling tons and tons of watches 20 years ago… Now, very, very few.

What’s causing this decline?

Is it because the younger generation isn’t concerned about time

No, it’s the opposite. It’s because of smartwatches and activity trackers (like the Fitbit). That, and the fact that this generation has time on their smartphones. So the need for time, is always close at hand.

Sales on chronographs and analog watches are dying, just like the batteries inside of them. Even solar powered watches are getting left in the dust… People used to use their watches for alarms, telling time in the dark, dual time zones, moon phases… Move over wrist watch, the smartphone has taken your place. It does all that, plus more (weather, compass, heartbeat, music…)

Smart technology has taken over the world.

And I know this firsthand, because it happened to me. I’m a huge wrist watch collector, I own tons of different styles, brands, dressy, casual, digital… Heck, I even own some pocket watches.

But then I bought a Fitbit…

Years ago I bought a fitness tracker. It worked quite well. I lost 30 pounds wearing one (see my full review here). Once I started wearing that, I didn’t take it off. I loved how it counted steps, calories burned, and sleep patterns.

And then last year, I bought an Apple Watch.

That was in Summer. And guess what? I haven’t taken it off since. I didn’t think I’d like it as much as I do, but honestly, I use it way more then I would have ever dreamed. It’s wonderful. It works perfect with my iphone, and I haven’t worn any other watch since.

So yes, it happened to me. The shift to the next generation. The future.

So are watches becoming a thing of the past?

I’d say so. Just like everything else; 8 tracks, cassettes, even books… It’s all going digital. Downloads. Streaming… Smart!

So what’s your take?

Are you a Fitbit or smartwatch fan?

Do you own one, both? Do you wear anything else?

Let me know in the comments below. I’d love to hear from you.

Cheers! :)
