Why GIA Is So Accurate In Diamond Grading

GIA (The Gemological Institute of America) really is the authority when it comes to diamonds and diamond grading.

After all, they wrote the book!

Really!

They devised the current 4C’s diamond grading system that all jewelers across the USA use to buy, sell, and grade diamonds with: Cut, Color, Clarity and Carat Weight.

So nobody knows the system better, then the people who designed it.

GIA set the standards… Making them, the undisputed king!

But what makes them so accurate?

  1. Years of experience and training
  2. The most advanced equipment in the industry
  3. Triple redundancy
  4. Rounding down

Let’s take a closer look…

1) Years of experience and training

For almost 100 years, GIA has led the industry with expertise, advancement, and training. Their diamond graduate programs (Diamontology, Diamond Grading Essentials…) are the most sought after credentials around. Their diplomas hold the highest admiration and esteem. Recognized and praised, there is no achievement higher. Nothing compares. They are the cream of the crop.

2) The most advanced equipment in the industry

GIA uses the most advanced equipment made by man to grade diamonds with. Much of this equipment they’ve created themselves. As far back as 1930, GIA has been using and perfecting the detecting system with specialized tools such as…

  • GIA Instrument Microscopes
  • GIA Diamond Check
  • DL Scopes
  • Daylight Equivalent Fluorescent Light Sources
  • Color Filters
  • X-Rays; Fluorescent, Diffractive Meters
  • Refractometer Lamps
  • Chemical Analysis
  • Dichroscopes
  • Diffraction Grating Spectroscopes
  • Imaging Photomicrography
  • GIA Diamond Dock
  • Handheld Loupes
  • Atomic Structure Analysis
  • Color Grading Master Sets
  • Diamond View
  • Research Tools and Reference Books

All things that can increase accuracy and give GIA the upper hand.

3) Triple redundancy

GIA doesn’t grade diamonds alone. They actually have a triple check system called “triple redundancy“. This means that 3 diamontologists evaluate and grade each and every stone. They then arrive on a single expert grade that best represents that diamond.

This redundancy assures there are zero disputes with the results or the report. So when GIA says that a diamond is SI1, E… They mean it!

4) Rounding down

Many jewelers who grade diamonds in house (themselves) round up (called “Grade Bumping“). Meaning, if a diamond is questionable, or borderline between two grades (like it could be an I1, or it could be an SI2), many places and people would call it the higher grade. This makes the diamond sound better, sell better, makes them more money, and is totally legit with the FTC (You can be off as much as one whole grade; because grading is subjective and opinionated).

But when GIA grades a diamond that’s borderline, they will always grade lower;

Rounding down!

This means that the grade put on a diamond is at least that, or better. This is why GIA is so trusted. No one disagrees with their grades or stance. There’s never a doubt or a question.

GIA leads. Their certificates (Diamond Reports) are the best there are. And it’s also the best way to be assured of the grades you’re buying (Not getting ripped off).

With GIA, an SI1, E, is just that!

But with other lax grading companies (like EGL, IGI…), an SI1, E, really could be an I1, F instead (also meaning, you paid too much!)

Compare the prices below:

CARAT, CLARITY, COLOR, CUT, POL, SYM, FLUOR PRICE VIEW
1.00, I1, F, EX, EX, EX, NONE $3,500 VIEW
1.00, SI2, E, EX, EX, EX, NONE $5,400 VIEW

Big difference in price!

So if you want accuracy, buy GIA!

But if you want to chance it, roll the dice and gamble, then go with any report and cross your fingers

Me, I’ll stick with GIA!

And I’m sure if you compared quality and diamonds… You would too!

Just ask any jeweler, anywhere in the world; “Who’s the best diamond grading company?”. They would all say the same thing: GIA!

Cheers! :)
