Platinum and Gold are the two most popular and commonly used metals for Engagement Rings.
They are both pretty Durable, Lustrous, and Jewelers love to work with them.
On the Moh’s Scale of Hardness, Platinum is a 4-4.5, and Gold (Pure 24k Gold) is only a 2.5-3.
Platinum is much more Rare than Gold… Extremely Rare. This Rarity, plus it’s added Durability and Hardness keeps the price of Platinum high.
When you compare the prices of Platinum Rings and Mountings versus Gold, you’ll see that Platinum is generally 3.5-4 times as expensive.
So let’s compare rings and different styles of mountings from some of the leading Jewelry Stores so you can see for yourself the price differences…

Platinum is Pure!
Platinum is a pure metal (no alloys or additives added), while Gold is mixed with 3-4 other Metals like Nickel, Copper, Silver and Zinc, that makes Gold much more Durable for Jewelry. Otherwise it would be too soft to hold in your Gemstones or Diamonds.
So combine the Purity of Platinum, it’s Hardness, along with it’s crazy history of being pulled from the Jewelry Stores to use for the Wars, as well as how incredibly Rare it is, it’s easy to understand why Platinum deserves it’s higher price tag.
Not to mention the fact that Platinum lasts longer than Gold (doesn’t wear down as fast), and it resists scratches better.
But is it worth 3.5-4 times the Price?
Absolutely!
But then again, only you, and your pocket book can decide that! :)
