A guessing game.

I’m going to show you 12 diamonds (and their specifications). Your goal is to determine which diamond sells for $4,000.

Don’t be fooled though, this game is not as easy as it sounds. For all of these diamonds are different carat weights, colors, clarity, cuts, shapes (and shapes can really make a diamond cheaper)…

So deciding which stone sells for exactly $4,000 (at the time of this post), could be difficult.

So let’s begin. Can you tell which diamond is $4,000?

Afterall, there is such a crazy variety to choose from (which is exactly the case if you go engagement ring shopping with a set budget).

So which diamond is it?

In fact. It’s actually diamonds 1 – 12.

You see, they are ALL $4,000 right on the dot. Every stone sells for the same price, but they all look and appear so visually different.

That’s because there are so many factors that go into the price of a diamond. And if a stone has a high clarity, usually the color will be lower. Likewise if the color is high, the clarity is generally lower. With mother nature it’s often a give or take. Strengths and weaknesses. All diamonds have them. Plus, any attribute can affect price: fluorescence, certification, pavilion angles, girdle thickness, where the inclusions reside, what color the flaws are… They all play a huge role in the final cost of the stone.

What this all means, is that shopping for price alone can result in a billion different variables. The diamond could look great, or not so great. It could be yellow, dark, lifeless, or it could sparkle like crazy and look absolutely beautiful.

So HOW do you shop for diamonds?

To shop for diamonds the correct way, do your homework first. Read up on diamonds (check out my ultimate diamond guide here), and decide which color and clarity you’d like. Figure out what cut appeals to you. Look at all the different shapes. Narrow it down. And once you get a set of specifications in mind, then you can shop and compare easily.

Compare apples to apples!

Only when you compare similar stones, will you truly see what $4,000 (or whatever dollar amount) can get you. And, you’ll also see who is giving you the better deal.
