  1. I’ve done this both ways since even before people had computers in their homes, and the Internet even existed.
    The personal aspect of dealing with jewelry has always been the primary focus for me, and my family on my mother’s side, since her father – my grandfather – was a jeweler and lapidary I learned so much from when I was young.
    The first really local jewelry store I spent significant amounts of time, thought, and money, is the one in town that has been here since the grandfather of the current store manager first opened it in the middle 1950s. When I first walked in was in the middle of 1991, when the current store manager was still in high school, and only worked on Fridays after school, and parts of Saturdays. And it was two locations before where it’s currently located.
    I also began shopping online as soon as the whole idea of shopping online began. Before that, before 1990, I was a confirmed QVC shopper! But, I never bought junk. They sold CZs (practically no diamonds because of the cost) and precious and semiprecious gemstones in good quality 14kt gold mountings, and pretty nice 925 sterling back then. Gold was not nearly as costly back then as it is now, so the mountings were very much more substantial than they have become since then. I still have several pieces from then, and they are in practically pristine, perfect condition, because I didn’t even wear them everyday, but very sporadically, with much care taken of each pieces to keep it clean and polished and sparkling. I can’t wear them now, because they are now too small thanks to arthritis, and how my knuckles have swollen up enough for them to need a full size larger than I used to wear, which was a 7. The local store wants $50 for each ring to resize them up one size in 14kt gold. That’s more than I can afford for having my rings resized. So, they wait patiently in my ring box. It’s not a jewelry box in the most common sense of the word. It only holds rings, nothing else. Right now, with two separate trays, about 8″ by 8″ square, at least two rings thick in each roll, including wedding bands, engagement rings, matched wedding sets, birthstone rings, other semiprecious stone rings in numerous styles, purely right hand “dress rings” and casual styles. Last count yielded about 200+!! It’s getting pretty stuffed right now! I got it from Amazon several years ago – I think about 2017, and I paid $29.99 for it, and I really love it.     The one thing that is a huge benefit to dealing with a local jeweler with a great reputation for customer service is just that – service. Repairs, remounting older stones into more modern styles, resizing and re-rhodium plating rings and other jewelry. I brought more business to my local store from family members on both sides, friends, coworkers, etc., than they had seen in some time! The store manager and I are good friends, and for all this benefit of my efforts got me quite a few discounts on my own work. So, I can definitely go along with your assertion of such things being possible!

    It’s not always who you know that can be a benefit for you – but, then again…

    • Great insight. I loved selling in the 90’s at the jewelry store. Such a great time, and yes, gold was everywhere. We sold no silver at the time, but boy did we sell tons and tons of diamonds. Things have changed drastically since then. Pandora has brought silver to half the stores now, as well as more created stones and the ever popular lab-grown diamonds now. Everything is different, but the fun of selling never ends. :) -Richard
