LINK CHAINS:
Link chains by far are the best type of chain to wear ever. This is because they do not have a bending point; you can fold them in half, twist them up, knot them, and they won’t harm the chain in the least.
Not only do they look great, but they are very secure for holding pendants and charms (Especially expensive diamond pendants).
What types of link chains am I talking about?
Now, let’s take a closer Look at them…
1) Wheat Chains
Wheat chains are my all time favorite chain (also called spiga or espiga chains). They are beautiful, elegant, smooth, and perfect as a stand alone chain, or one that holds a pendant (They come to a nice V on the neck as well).
Wheat chains are intricate, symmetrical, and resembles a rope chain.
With intertwining oval interlocking links, these chains are the ultimate pendant chain because they look great, feel great, and won’t kink up.
2) Figaro Chains
Figaro chains (also known as 3-1 links) have been around forever because they look good and LAST!
They are flattened links that come in different sizes, small links and longer links. Usually these are grouped in patterns of 3 small links, and one elongated link, but sometimes you can find them with 4 or 5 small links in between.
The repeated patterns are attractive and make a very popular choice for either a man or a woman.
3) Cable Link Chains
Cable link chains (also called rolo links) are simple and cool.
You can get them in any width or thickness, and they are about as ideal as you can get (Except for those fine, dainty, frail versions which I don’t recommend).
With round or oval links, alternate horizontal and vertical, this common chain is nice, uniform and durable.
Cable links are so basic, that they’re often referred to as just “link chains” or “rolo chain“.

4) Mariner Link Chains
Mariner link chains (also known as gucci and anchor links) are beautiful chains, and the center bar keeps them from tangling or twisting.
They are extremely durable, slick, sharp, and perfect for pendants or charms.

5) Curb Link Chains
I LOVE Curb link chains (also known as Cuban curb links), are solid, durable, and masculine (One of the best selling chains and bracelets for men).
The links are usually flattened with oval, round, or square links, and many of these designs have beveled edges which catch the light and bling.
They give a very distinct, very chiseled appearance which is perfect for a long lasting chain.

Other Recommendations:
Two other chains that look good and work great (and you can’t bend them in half) are the rope chains and box chains.
Rope Chains
Rope chains have a great appeal because they are rounded (like the wheat chains), and makes a pendant slide easily along their length and NOT get caught!
Many ropes are diamond cut as well, which adds much sparkle and shine to the chain.
Box Chains
Box chains are sleek and simple. They look great and work great (as long as you don’t buy them too skinny – Usually a medium thickness of at least 1 – 1.5mm works best).
Box chains show off a pendant extremely well, and are pretty durable (They do have a tendency overtime to stretch and pull though).
Words of Advice
A couple of other things you should keep in mind:
- The thicker the chain, the more durable it will be
- Don’t buy hollow or semi-hollow chains!!!!
- Make sure the chain looks balanced with your pendant, and that the bail is big enough to slide over the clasp
- If the links are independently soldered, they will never open or pull apart
- The BEST type of necklace clasp to buy is the lobster clasp (NOT the spring ring)!

Great info ~ very glad to know as I search for a nice chain to hold a special pendant that was given to me.
Can you do a list of the WORST chains to buy? The Crisscross chain is THE WORST for keeping clean, not pulling your neck hair out, and not stretching out and breaking! (Try picking out a whole sweater’s worth of fuzz from over before you can even solder it because those fibers will burn and permanently get stuck in the chain!)

Would you say that a 2mm spiga chain is a sturdy chain? I’ve been wearing one for the past month. It’s holding up well but the thinness of the chain has me a little worried that I might accidentally tug and break it while sleeping or showering.
You also wrote that the bail should be big enough to slide over the clasp. Do you mean that it should slide over the eyelet? or should it be able to slide over the claw as well? Having trouble finding a bail large enough to slide over the claw of my necklace.

Hi Kimberly. 2mm is fine, but of course, going 3mm or larger is always better for durability. The thicker the chain the more durable it is. If it worries you, or if you fear losing your pendant, then upgrade a mm and see how that goes. The bail should be large enough to fit over the end tab and slide onto the chain. The end tab is on the other side of the chain versus the clasp. The bail usually will not fit over the clasp. -Richard
