THE VERY FIRST DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RING

Diamond engagement rings have become an enduring symbol of love and commitment, but have you ever wondered where this tradition began?

The very first diamond engagement ring can be traced back to the 15th century, when Archduke Maximilian of Austria proposed to Mary of Burgundy.

The ring that Maximilian presented to Mary was a simple gold band with a diamond set in the center. This diamond was not particularly large or extravagant by today’s standards, but it was still a rare and precious gem at the time. It may have looked something similar to the ring in the picture (not that actual ring, because all we have is a vague description).

So why did Maximilian choose a diamond for his engagement ring?

During the 15th century, diamonds were still relatively rare and were considered a symbol of wealth and status. Diamonds were also believed to have magical properties and were thought to bring their owners strength, courage, and protection.

The tradition of giving diamond engagement rings quickly caught on among the wealthy and noble classes of Europe, and by the 18th century, diamond engagement rings had become a widespread symbol of love and commitment.

Of course, not everyone could afford a diamond engagement ring in those days. It wasn’t until the late 19th century, with the discovery of diamond mines in South Africa and the development of new cutting and polishing techniques, that diamonds became more widely available and affordable.

In 1888, the De Beers diamond company was founded, and they quickly became the dominant force in the diamond industry. In order to boost diamond sales, the company launched a hugely successful marketing campaign that emphasized the idea that “a diamond is forever.” This campaign helped to cement the diamond engagement ring as an enduring symbol of love, and it remains a popular choice to this day.
