I know I talked about girdles many times before, but now, it’s worthless!
If you ever want to know why some diamonds look smaller than other diamonds of the exact same carat weight…
It’s all because of the cut.
Some diamonds are cut deeper than others, and some have extra weight around the waist, that is unnecessary and not needed.
It’s called a thick girdle.
And actually, to be exact, it’s called an “extremely thick girdle“.
Compare a regular girdle, to an extremely thick girdle below.
That really thick girdle is there for one reason only:
To add carat weight to the stone.
Because a bigger carat weight equals bigger prices and bigger profits.
But you know what sucks?
This ultra thick girdle is not helping the diamond any.
First off…
It’s an eye-sore. It stands out really obvious and very distracting.
Secondly…
It makes it difficult to set and secure in the prongs because they can’t easily wrap around that thick edge.
Third…
It makes the diamond less brilliant. A poor cut like this makes the diamond look lumpy and lack brilliance and sparkle.
And lastly…
It makes the diamond look smaller.
All the carat weight is below the crown where you don’t see it unless you turn the diamond sideways. And from a top-down view, it will look much smaller, which is not cool.
The best girdle grades are:
The best grades to have for girdles are:
- Thin
- Medium
- Slightly Thick
Anything else is just a waste.
The girdles that I advise against are:
- Very Thick
- Extremely Thick
Look for the girdle thickness grade on a GIA diamond report, as shown below…
Because unwanted weight is an unwanted diamond.
And if the diamond is dark, small, and pricey…
Then why bother?
